Litter training problems?!?! Hi everyone. I have been getting a lot of advice from you guys and really appreciate it. I am trying to get Sparkles to go to the bathroom in a litter box with a wee wee pad. Right now she goes to the bathroom in the bathroom on the floor of course or outside. The problem is she seems to think that the litter box is a bed. She sleeps in a crate in our room by our bed until we get up in the morning and then one of us takes her to the bathroom with us. She just sits in the litter box or lays down and then gets up and squats and pees on the floor. I tried buying the spray and spraying it on the pads but it doesn't interest her in the least. I was proud of her for going in the bathroom but am worried about the pee smell soaking in to my wood floors. She is only 8 months old I have only had her since she was 5 months. We live in Michigan so it gets pretty cold or I would just settle with her going outside. Can someone give me some ideas on how to get her to recognize the litter pan as her potty? Oh and I do take her and her business to the pan every time she goes on the floor. Thanks alot. |
gross ....why don't you house train her?!! |

Lillie came to live with us in August. She was 8 weeks old..she would jump out of her bed and go right to the pee pad..I also tried putting the pad in the litter box and like your little one...she would lay in it. sometimes she would use it but, I don't know if it's because she actually had to "get into" it that made her uncomfortable so....I put the pads on the floor. Lillie is very good about using them...I'm not saying she doesn't have accidents because she does but, not many. I don't use the paper pads...I use the cloth reusable pads and they are working out fine...the paper pads are too small (I think) Yorkies have never been known for "easy house breaking" Good Luck! |
I'm working on the same thing right now with mine. She doesn't mind using the pad, but not sure about getting in that box, lol. She too, has laid on the pads. When she'd pee anywhere, I'd take the pad and rub it in her pee to get the scent on it. When she'd crawl in the box to lay down, I'd put her little nose close enough to smell her pee. That showed her that "oh, this is not a good place to lay, its got pee in it". So far, thats working. But she still prefers any pad thats not in the boxes to the pads that are in the boxes. I'm still trying though, haven't given up. But she hasn't laid back in the boxes since I put her nose close enough to smell the pee! |

--- I would love to litter train Ferdinand, but he wants nothing to do with it. I've tried and tried. He'll go on a pad that's on the floor, but he wont go on a pad that's in the litter box. So good luck to you!! |
cold climate, snow, rain....my baby goes outside. He loves the snow and , frankly, he was litter trained when I got him and once he started outside, he chose never to use the litter again. I had thought to let him use both during the winter, but he made the decision for me. |
i just think it's yucky. to each their own but it really doesn't take much time & effort to take a dog outside to go potty . |
I have the same problem. My chelsea is trained outside. In the past 3 weeks she has no accident and doing so well. Everytime I open the door she pees or potty. I am thinking to confine her in the bathroom during the day while we are not at home aprox 8 hours. Do you think this is possible or probably confuse her ? If I use pee pad or trained in the pee pad which pad do you use ? Right now I come home from work for lunch but sometimes I can't so any solutions ? |
grass pads   I went out and purchased grass pads yesterday after reading about them in another forum. My Chico still hasn't went potty yet while on any pads. But I guess this is just the beginning since I've only had him for a week now and he's 14wks. I heard you should only make them potty for like 15mins. But the past few days I will sit there with him for an hour and he still won't go. I don't know what else to do besides playing this waiting game. Any other advice is welcome!!!!!!!!! |
