Pee pee pads or outside? Which should I do. I don't have a Yorkie yet but hopefully will soon. Does anyone have a doggie door? I'm wondering if that might be to heavy for a Yorkie to push. And how do you train them to go on a pee pee pad? |
My furbaby is trained to go outside and use pee pads. It depends on your situation, where you live, etc. It is convenient when traveling to have them pee pad trained. I don't have a doggie door, but several people at YT do. |
Pee pad training is fairly easy. You take one and pick up the piddle or poop so the scent gets on there and you take the baby to the pad and show him/her that is where to potty. They get their scent on the pad so in time they learn somewhat. You also have to take them there when you know they will pee/poo and put them there until they go and then highly praise them. Yorkies love praise. I dont' have a doggie door because my yard isn't fenced in. I would have loved to have one. But even if you have a fenced in yard you still need to becareful. Depending on where you live you may have a problem with other predatory animals or people that steal pets. So if you do choose to use a doggie door be sure to monitor his/her comings and goings. OOPs the doggie doors are not heavy. They have a variety of types. Check them out and decide which will be best for your situation. |
I think I'll try to train my future Yorkie to do pee pads and a bit of outside. Thanks! |
I would definitely use the pee pads. We just got our little Dobby last week, and he's already doing a great job with them. We have one outside on the deck- where he usually goes, and one in the kitchen by his crate at night, so he can go potty on it while we're sleeping. Dobby's pretty good at running to the door when he needs to go- or he starts getting squirmy and i'll just take him outside to use the pad. Just make sure you take you dog to the pee pad about 30 minutes after he eats or drinks. That has really helped Dobby. Hope you get yours soon! and good luck.:aimeeyork |
My puppy was littertrained when I got him. Even though we live in the snow belt, I decided litter training was not for me. It seems to me that it gives him permission to go in the house and its like having a cat. There's no bladder and bowel control if they can go at will. He doesn't mind cold, rain , or snow . In fact, he loves the snow and he's only 3 lbs and 9 months old. I thought to do both at first until the winter was over, but he stopped using the litter on his own and only goes outside. Works for me! |
