Peed on carpet now what? I just got my yorkie today and I'm working on housebreaking my puppy. What is the best way to react when my little guy pees where he shouldn't? Right now all I have been doing is positive reinforcement for a pee well done and if he goes on the carpet or other places he shouldn't I just clean it up. Is this the way to do it? |
You'll have to say a loud no when he pees where you don't want him . |
So just 1 good, loud NO!? Does it help to put him in the location he is supposed to pee right after the loud NO? |
yes that is what you want to do. After you do it repeatedly they will start to know that is where you want then to go |
This is your first day with your Yorkie! I would first bond with the puppy for a couple weeks before starting training. He needs to trust, bond and know you first. Set him up in an x-pen maybe in the kitchen with a pee pad on one end, food, water and a bed at the other end. I would hold him and cuddle and do not put him on the carpet unless he has just gone. Start very slow and set him up for success. It is a slow process but worth it. Congratulations on your new pup! |
Also, does the NO! have to come during the act or can it come later. For example, a few minutes ago I found a #2 surprise on the carpet. Should I have taken little Dawbi to show him the poo and then give him the NO and put him outside? Or is that too late? |
potty time No, that will not work..in another few months...and it will be quite a few before training is done..your house will smell like a sewer...prevent the pee and poop on the flooring in the first place..get a pen, gate, whatever or your pup will be in the habit of going where the smell was...and you can never rid a carpet of urine smell to the nose of a dog... |
That is too late he wont understand what you are telling him no for. You have to catch them in the act. Thats why it is best to keep them confined to an area when you are not watching them |
agreed. Yorkies dont react well to yelling & punishment. If you are using peepads I would press it down on the pee to get the sent on it & then put a little piece of poo on it, place the pad where you want the dog to go. show him/her let them smell it & reward with nice talk & pets. clean the spot up on the carpet. I always say ewwww if they have a accident. But I rescue & even adults always have one accident the first day. If its a boy get belly bands or tie a long sock around him. barkindogclothes.com have the cheapest diapers. Congratulations & remember rewarding good behavior will have a much faster effect then punishing bad. Quote:

I am very excited about the little guy and am trying to do things as right as possible, but there is so much to learn. Thanks everyone for the help. |

If they aren't caught in the act, it don't count. :p They don't know 1 minute later what they are being punished for. |
