Puppy Pad ---> Outside Hi all, Now that all the other puppies have found their homes there's more quality time with our new little Leia. She is 11 weeks old and 100% puppy pad trained. She even gets up in the middle of the night to go to her pad. This is my first time just straight pad training, but Leia seemed to be so sharp with it that I felt perhaps we could skip the crate and take her to bed at nights with the rest of us. This is working out great, but my question is, when is a good time to transition her to outside pottying? Bender and Tara go outside 7 or 8 times a day for pottying. I'm not sure how long I should keep her inside on a pad, or if I should even try pushing for her to go outside when things are working so well inside. Also, what have you all found as the best way to transition? Should I take a pad outside for her to begin with so she gets the idea? Any help would be appreciated :) |
pee pads My experience with piddle pads is that it teaches the dog that its ok to pee in the house. My first dog I taught to go on the piddle pad. She went on it all right. The problem was she thought it was ok to pee on my rug by the back door. It took me a good year and a half to break her of this. My second dog I got in November in Michigan. I did not use piddle pads with him. I just would feed him and watch his behavior and take him out on the grass, he learned almost immediately and . I was very proud of him as sometimes it was dam cold. But he learned what outside was for. Good luck |

When I first got my puppy, she was 3 months old and I couldn't take her outside because I don't have a yard and live in a high-risk area for parvo. I had her pee pad trained inside the house and she was very good about peeing and pooping on her pad. I only had one pad down in the kitchen and she would run to it whenever she needed to go. When she turned 4 months old and completed her shots, I started training her to go outside. She was really stubborn in the beginning and would love to sniff around outside but wouldn't go to the bathroom outside, she would wait until she got back inside. I had to bring her pad outside for her to know it's ok to go. I agree that using pads inside the house trains them that it's ok to go inside the house. She's 6 months now and still has several accidents every week. I absolutely refuse to put the pads back down though. Good luck! |
I wouldn't start her outside, unless she's had all her shots unless you have a fenced back yard. I know Venus has learned from Adonis to go outside too. But she does both now. She's 6 months old if this helps. I first started her outside, then got the pads for inside. And at first when she'd potty where I wanted her to, praise, praise and give a treat. |
