My Puppy hates our new puppy!!!! I have a 4 month old yorkie (Charlie). He has always loved other dogs and people. He has always been a great puppy. We wanted to get another puppy to keep him company. I also wanted to get a puppy now as it is almost summer and she would not be so cold when learning to potty outside. The problem is that I brought the little girl home (Bella) and Charlie hates her. He growls, which he has NEVER done, and he bites her. She growls back, but he is twice her size, and he easily overpowers her and pins her down. I need help! It makes me sooo sad. I wanted him to have a playmate, but he doesn't seem to want her around. Will this go away? Is there anything that I can do to help ease him and let him know that it's not okay to be mean, but that I still love him to death? Please help!! Mandee |
I think he may have alpha dog mentality and that his territory is being taken over. Make sure to let him know that certain stuff is his, like certain toys and his food and water dish or bowl. Also, if you can try to get him to learn that the new addition to the family is a playmate, he may warm up to her. Try letting them play tug-of-war with a sock or a toy if possible. I've heard of many cases in which one Yorkie isn't too happy about another Yorkie in the household, but I think in most cases they grow into it and start to appreciate the company. :) |
I would love them to "Play" anything together, but he immediately pounces on her and bites. I try to hold them, one in each arm and repeat over and over "play nice". If they lick each other with out nipping, I give them treats, but it they bite, I say No with a stern voice. Do you think this helps? If not, how can I encourage them to play tug-of-war or any other kind of play? |
Mandee - Welcome to YT. You can find a ton of great advice here. What I would do is let them fight for a bit, only intervening if he is going to really hurt her or vice versa. I did this with Stewie and my brother's Shar Pei (who is at least 50something pounds) and they get along great now. I just left them alone and let them establish who was the leader and who was the follower and I have no worries anymore. Good luck with your dogs. Let us konw what happens. |
Thanks! Just how long should I let them go at it? I get really worried for her as she is only 2lbs and we have all hardwood floors. Charlie is about 4lbs. |
I agree with Kristy...You need to let them work it out between them. Determining their prospective rank is a pretty normal thing with dogs and once that seems to be established things will generally calm down pretty fast. I have a 100 pound Lab, another 80+ pound Lab and a 13 pound Dachshund that I had to introduce my wee little 2 pound guy to so I understand your fear in her getting hurt because at first I too was petrified that something would happen to him but I found the more I let them interact the better it got. Now Teddy weighs 5 pounds and his best friend is the 100 pound Lab. |
I'd say let them at it as long as it takes. When I was in the situation, I didn't say anything or try to break them up for at least a half hour. |
Thanks so much. I let them duke it out and Bella is beginning to stand her own. She is holding her ground and Charlie is not biting her as much. I hope this is the beginning of a friendship. Keep your fingers crossed for us. |
Let them have at it I have two male yorkies, Benni was at least twice the size of Garett when I got them three weeks apart (Benni was the newer addition). They acted like they hated each other. They still do, it is playing. Believe me, when Bella (?) has had enough she will stand up for herself. The funny thing is that Garett is the smaller and he is the alpha dog next to me. He gets the best toy, anything that Benni has he takes, etc. Let them work it out themselves, the difference in weight is not that great. |
Mandee, welcome to YT its nice to have u here... i just want to let u know im in the same boat lol, Chelsey is 5 months and Chanel is now 8 weeks, shes been with us for 1 week and the first few days Chelsey acted like a spoiled snobbish brat, she wouldnt have anything to do with her, shes starting to be nice to her now and i keep telling her to play/fight GENTLE... she doesnt like to share her toys with her yet, and she takes everything away from Chanel that shes playing with, but i just try and take it as it comes, it looks nasty when shes acting mean, but Chanel is starting to stand her ground now although she is only very tiny at just over 10oz, i put them together while they sleeping on the couch so they can learn that laying together can be cozy lol Good luck and know ur not alone on this, we are all here to help ;) |
Update: Charlie and Bella are doing much better. I think that despite her little size, Bella is going to be the Alpha dog. I am so happy that they are getting along (at least for a few minutes at a time). :animal-sm :animal-sm |
I introduced my yorkies to each other 2 months ago when they were 6 mths old and they still fight about who gets my lap but they do fight and play-fight sometimes I can't tell the difference I just inforce a strict rule they can't fight on my lap or neither of them get to be on my lap. They can fight about rank but I'm still boss! he he. :p |
Aggression to new pup Our Gracie went into a deep, dark depression when we got our Maltese, Sampson. She was throwing up, diarrhea and was moping around the house. We were so upset and wondered if we did the right thing. About a week later, she got used to him and mothered him for a week. Then, she started acting like a normal dog. Now, they fight, chase, bark, run circles around the hose and it seems like they are trying to kill eachother. I asked Gracie's military school teacher about their behavior and she said they were just doing what dogs do. Trying to establish who the alpha dog is - at this point we still don't know... and playing and as long as we did not see blood to let them work it out. I admit that I have pulled them apart a few times and given them a rest. We have had Sampson for about two months now and they still fight and certainly fight over chew toys, balls, chews... but just when I think they hate eachother, I find them curled up next to eachother taking a nap. Hang in there! Linda |
