Housebreaking new puppy We just got a new yorkie, Angus, on Monday. He is 10 weeks old. The breeder had him trained fairly well to the pads. She also left water and food out 24/7. From what I am reading, its best to feed on a schedule and not leave his food out all day. Is this correct? Should his water be left out all day? Should we remove both at night? We have him set up in a room with his crate. He has really taken to the crate and we've had no problem with him sleeping there or just playing with his toys. We haven't been closing the crate at night and we have left a pad in his room which he seems to only use at night. Should we remove this pad? Should he be closed up in the crate when he's in it? We moved a pad outside and we're gradually moving it towards the grass. He's not really giving us much indication/warning when he needs to go so we've just been taking him out first thing in the morning, after his naps and before and after playing. How does all of this sound? We've never had an indoor dog before so this is all new to us. Thank you for any and all advice. Sorry this is so long! :) |
Is the way you are doing your potty training now working for you? If he is consistently going on the pee pads and you are not having any problems with him, I see no reason to change anything you are doing. It is not necessarily better to schedule feed or free feed. I personally like free feeding. It is really just a matter of personal preference. If he is fine in his room with the crate door open and he comes out at night to potty, I don't see any reason to change that either. It is all a matter of personal preference. If what you are doing is working for you, changing it might really screw things up. I say, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! It sounds like you are doing a fantastic job!   |
Well said, if he is using the pad and not having any accidents, you are doing a great job. It too me several months to housebreak my two. I do leave water and dry food out at all times and feed canned food in the morning. Keep up the good work. |
First, congratulations on your new Yorkie! Puppies are wonderful, aren't they? What you are doing sounds great. The only thing I want to be sure is that you are heavily praising and treating for appropriate pottying. When puppy potties where you want him to, you need to make it clear that you are extremely pleased - Give a yummy treat that you have with you for those occasions and in a high pitched, little girl voice: "you are sooo good, you are the best puppy ever". Make a big deal over it!!! Water, definitely, needs to be out all day. I, personally, am not a fan of free-feeding. BUT, if your Yorkie is quite small or has ever had problems with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), then you need to have food available at all times. How you use the crate is entirely a personal decision. It's up to you. At 10 weeks, it would probably be difficult for him to go all night without pottying, though. I'd leave the pad. Above all, be patient. It will take some time (possibly, quite a bit of time) before your Yorkie is fully house-broken. |
Even a well trained dog can have a accident now and again ..the best thing is that they know where to go and conisistantly try to hit the target so to speak .Miss Mini is pad trained but has easily made a outside transition in both areas ,she can be even trusted on the bed ..when she was puppy she would pee the bed ...not nice ..hahaha .All in all patience and consistancy is the key .they do grow up ..and a mature dog is so nice to have . |
Thank you all so much! I feel better about how we are doing things now. When he goes to the bathroom outside, he gets LOTS of praise and a treat! He's doing much better than I thought he would be at this point so we're happy! |
About your question with feeding, I think everyone here does it different. I know I free feed Venus in the daytime. I take her food up at 7pm, and hope this keeps her from having to poo at night. When I started doing that, she'd been pooing in her crate! I keep her water down though, and never picked it up. She's no longer crated at night, she sleeps on the bed with me and my older yorkie. After the first time she crawled up those doggie steps, and made it on the bed, she was so proud that she got on the "big bed", I didn't have the heart to keep crating her beside the bed at night anymroe. Some feed on a schedule, some take food up at a certain hour, and some free feed day and night. I feel you have to find what works for you and your dog. |
