My Taffy does the same thing at 2 yrs it is like she can read my mind.:) and she use to hold on too my pants so I couldnt leave. Now I have a special treat she only gets it when I leave the house. I give it to her and walk away from her and I don'[t look at her either. after she gets her treat she runs to the chair and watchs me drive away.. Thank goodness for treats.:D |

I used to have a problem with Bender as far as getting upset about leaving goes. He would get very upset whenever someone was about to leave, so he'd block the doorway, bark, and pull at your pant leg if you tried to pass him. I actually had to trick him away in the beginning. I'd take a treat with me to the door and throw it towards the other side of the room. He would go chase after it and I'd have enough time to get out. I had to do this for about 2 weeks, and ever since then he waits on the other side of the room when I'm about to leave...waiting for his treat. It worked out really well and I wasn't even trying to train him, :rolleyes: I was just on my last nerve/resort. But hey, it might just work for you guys! :) One thing I haven't figured out is how to make him leave me alone when I'm getting off the bed. He doesn't bite, but he gets very upset...Bender could easily spend the entire day in bed (and has, when I've been sick). He's always so sad to start his day, which I guess is oh so stressful, since he sits on the couch and watches tv all day. :p |
I heard that when they do this behavior it is because they haven't given permission for anyone to leave their pack. I have started to stand between the door and Dudley and stare him down when he does this behavior. I just point my finger at him and don't say anything. He now calms down pretty quickly and even ignores people sometimes. |
Who would have ever thought at this point in my life (64) I would try thinking like a dog! It true. I just ordered Ceacer Milan's videos. Buddy is not biting when I leave he is starting to boss me around by growling. Became really fresh a couple of times. I think he has 2 personalities. This also started out of nowhere! He will be 3 in Jan 07. I swear these Yorkies are more like people than canine. They think too much:D My daughter has a pug who since a pup would be so excited when someone would come in but would not let them leave. He could not bite because his mouth is flat but he would try his hardest to keep you from leaving. |
K.C. also holds on to my pant leg when he doesn't want me to leave, but when I tell him no he stops. He seems worse when I am walking others to the door though and won't always let go when asked. I have never really seen it as much of a problem, but didn't really think about the dominance issue. I will be a little more firm about it now instead of ignoring it so it doesn't lead to other behaviors. |
Farewell snaps here too! Our Casanova does the same thing when we are leaving and tell him, "Sorry but you have to stay this time" If you put you hand in the STAY signal he will snip (it never hurts) your hand. I just think it is his way of showing us he isnt happy about being left at home. However, just recently (he is 2.5 years old) has also started the behaivor mentioned; barking and snapping at visitors when they leave. Have to get a handle on this! Will try the suggestions in above posts. Good luck to all! We really do spoil our dogs...and others hate our spoiled children and or furbabies! I figure they can get over it tho. tee hee |
Thanks everyone for the great advice and other "BITING WHEN LEAVING" stories. Nice to know Biggie's not the only crazy dog out there. :p hehe jk! but just an update: I tried a few things such as having Biggie on a leash and having a friend "pretend" to leave over and over after a while Biggie didn't seem to care? But I don't know if it's because it was so repetitive he stopped caring and figured he knew what was next???? The next day Biggie carried on getting mad at me when I left home. So I think if I continuously enforce training him on a lease he'll eventually get over it. Anyone else have ideas? I'd love to hear them! Next I also plan on training Biggie to walk next to me or behind me on a leash. Also when walking out the door I should be first!! Slowly but surely I'll become the pack leader!!
