Working and trying to potty train?? My pup's a little more than 5 months now... And I'm starting to realize I haven't been really successful potty training him :( . As long as he's enclosed in the kitchen he sticks to pee pad. But once Pepper sneaked thru the gate to the bathroom and left 'little suvenirs' there. Then, a few days ago, out of the blue, he peed and pooped in the bedroom (where he had been allowed to roam accident-free for the past month or so. Is he regressing?? I take him outside and he refuses to go potty there, I even took his peepad and wiped the pee side around in the grass to leave his scent, doesn't seem to work. The problem is I work and can't take him with too often. I know he's not able to hold too long but hubby gets home 5 hours after I leave, is that ok to expect him to hold that long? And how would I do that?? I'm clueless  , pls any advice... I only had a big dog growing up and pottytraining was a breeze, she seemed to have an iron bladder... |
Tell me about working and trying to potty train!!!!! I will say this though - my Murphy is 14 months old now - and I am away from home four days a week for 6 or 7 hours. He is confined to the kitchen/laundry room area (with no pee pads or anything like that) --- and for months, he has never gone to the bathroom while I'm gone. And - luckily when I'm home - if I take him out every couple hours, he is real good about peeing outside. **** But - if he is free roaming the house and I haven't taken him out for a while - he'd go anyplace and could care less -- So - I just take him out often - it works! I usually can't get home during lunch, so Howie is home for about 8 hours a day by himself. I feel really bad and looking into someone to come by and play with him for an hour or two, at least a couple days a week. But, I leave him in a play pen. I put his pee pee pads on one side, his bed and food/water on another. Enough room for him to roam around and i leave toys for him. He's usually pretty good about going on his pee pads, although I do sometimes find a spot (the SAME spot! even though I've cleaned it with Nature's Miracle), where he'll have an accident. But, I'm sure it's just because he's still a little boy and accidents are normal. Good luck!! =) |
I worked with my other puppies and it seemed to take them about 8 months before I could trust them. With Cali Iwas home full time and I wee wee pad trained and she trained within weeks. Just hang in there he will get there!! |
I read somewhere that you can expect a puppy to hold it one hour for every month of age up to six months. I have been working with Gracie and she can hold it all night (up to 9 hours) as long as no food or fluid within two hours of bed time. During the day, she can go probably four or 5 hours depending on how much she has had to drink. I would suggest crate training. 5 hours is stretching the crate time a bit but as long as it does not go over that it should be fine. Most dogs will do almost anything to avoid eliminating where they sleep. |
Venus will be 5 months Nov 11th. When I keep her in the kitchen, she always pees on the pad. Seems with poop, she gets close to it, but maybe if she'd circle less....she wouldn't get dizzy, and miss the pad. I've started working on the living room and kitchen area's now. Some days, she won't mess up in the living room, then other days, I have the carpet cleaner going 2-3 times a day, after seeing a spot. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm successful now:confused: It seems one day, there is a great improvement, then the next day, she's peeing everywhere again. I see your pain here! Hoping it does get better for both of us! |
Oh, I know that can be tough... I was so proud of my dog because he stuck to just one pee pad in the kitchen and could roam between the kitchen and the bedroom. Then one day, I saw him pee and right after poop in the middle of the bedroom... Weird because those weren't even spots where he used to have his pads. Then he snuck up to the bathroom and peed on the rug. :( . When I first got him I tried crate training, I made the crate so small and he still pooped in it, it usually ended up all over him and he had baths almost every day. So I switched for xpen. He doesn't have accidents if he's confined to the kitchen, but I can't trust him in other parts of the apartment. And he hates being outside if it's cold/windy/raining (I'm so excited thinking about the snow  )... It makes it tough to hang out and wait for him to potty outside when all he wants is coming back inside... Sorry, I guess I needed to vent a little. |
i swear my girls deliberately pee on the floor to get the other one in trouble. If your watching them they hover by the back door if they want to go wee wee. Sometimes ive caught tamzyn (4 mnth) pee on the floor and then stand behind my legs looking at Izzie (9 mnths) as if to say 'it wasn't me mummy it was izzie' At this point Izzie will look sheepish and take the blame although she didn't even do it! Its like having two more children |
What I learned, so far... :animal36 I haven't trained a Yorkie alone before, so this is my first time and this is what I learned: About peeing outside: at first Chibi (my furbaby) would not go outside when he was 3 months, he was a little scared so I just brought the pad with me and left it in the grass, nothing happened, but after taking him outside several times, eventually he went outside. (It turned out that the pad outside made no difference.) Then I praised him well for maybe a minute and gave him a small doggie treat. After repeating this several times eventually he would go outside, however he still uses the pads when he is indoors. When he goes on the floor we don't say anything, just wipe it up then wipe the area with dilute bleach(it removes the thiols, or smelly part of the pee-pee), and wipe dry so he can't lick it. When he goes on the pad, and we catch him going, we praise him well while he's in the act, and give him a treat when he's done. At 6 months he has started to hold it longer, about 5 hours. Personnally, I think it's ok to let him go on the pads when you cannot be home, just try to bring him out on a regular schedule(if possible!). After all the are so little! Chibi is getting better, but we're not there yet, sometimes he mistakes the rug for the wee-wee pad, but we're going to try some methods that were posted here on Yorkie talk! |
Second Nature Dog Litter They have it at petsmart and petco. I'm gonna try to litter train my pups with it. It's made out of recycled paper. I'll let you know how it goes. A friend of mine trained her chiuahua with this. |
How long before I dont have to come home for lunch? I am currently crate training my 4 month old. I put him in the crate at 8-8:30 am and come home at 12:30 to let him out too pee and poop. Put him back in the crate til 3 when the kids come home. He has no problems at night staying in crate from 11pm to 6 am. How long before I can leave him in the crate til 3:00 during the work week? |

Loki will never be able to hold it all day. Some dogs just can't. He's still completely house trained and crate trained, but if my husband isn't home during the day I arrange to come home or have someone let him out or I take him to the trainer's for daycare. |
Working and Training I can gate off a big area so that he can eat and set up paper for him to pee on while Im at work, but will that negate all my outside training? And when is it a good age to do that..if it is a good thing to do? |
That would be the best situation, to have a dog that's both inside and outside trained... I really don't mind having a pee pad in the house, but Pepper doesn't want to go potty outside. He sniffs around and I know he knows it's other dog's markings but apparently he feels no need to leave his own... . And as soon as we come back from the walk, he heads straight to the pad, it's quite funny actually..... |
