Hiking Leg HELP!! Cooper was perfectly trained to the pad in the kitchen and was fixed. He recently started hiking his leg ... and he doesn't want to go outside, but he is now peeing everywhere in the kitchen =( I thought since he was fixed he would always squat?! WHAT DO I DO?!?!?! |
I do have little boys! hmmmm do you think you can use a belly band. That might help! Oh I bet he's time out alot!!!! |
Alot of times, shortly after a male is fixed they will stark marking and lifting their leg. Sometimes it is just temporary and sometimes it is not. Get him a belly band and you won't have to worry about it. |
Actually, most male dogs lift their legs, neutered or not. Neutering usually (but not always) drastically reduces their desire to mark everything in site. Many dogs continue to mark for a few weeks after neutering until their hormone levels settle down. You may have to go back to potty training basics. Good luck! |

I have the same problem with Piccolo. He was neutered Sep.27. |
My dog is five years old, neutered years ago... and he always has to hike that leg up and put a little bit of pee in about 20 different places whenever we go out. I have actually put pee pads all over the couch before because he went through a little phase of always wanting to pee there. After awhile, he stopped though... just had to reprimand him verbally. I always use the method of making him sniff where he peed, saying NO!, then taking him outside and giving him verbal praises when he goes on the tree instead the couch. |
Oh thanks for that idea! Cooper was actually fixed in the summer! -- this is a new thing, I think we may have to start over with him! Keep the tips coming! ;) |
Yes, hiking/lifting the leg is normal in a neutered male. The only thing that usually changes after neutering is their desire to leave their 'mark' everywhere. It really isn't a problem outdoors if they lift their leg, but if they're training on wee wee pads indoors, setting up a post for them to pee on will work. We have one of those little red hydrants that Petsmart sells, set up in the center of the pee pads. They lift their leg against it and it solves the problem. A friend of mine uses a liter bottle filled with sand. Same idea and it works fine. Just be sure to scold the bad behavior when they lift their leg indoors in the wrong place. Good Luck. :) |
How do I use belly bands? Is it basically a diaper? |

that's what i thought, i'm looking for a bit of a more permanent solution |
I think giving them a target in the middle of the pad is going to be your best bet. I like the little fire hydrant idea. |
8 months and dosent pee outside My pup is 8 months and he still squats to pee and he does not pee or poo outside he is not fixed yet but i am wondering how to get him used to peeing outside? tried those drops they sill and it didnt work |
I'm in similar situation, my pup's a little younger but doesn't go potty outside as well... LOL, I tried putting his pad outside and wiping it around in the grass...didn't help. Took him out for the most of the day....didn't help, he beats records holding it in until we come back home- so I know he has the potential. good luck, I guess we have to keep trying. |
My pup is 7 months old and neutered. He lifts his leg to pee but goes in the pad. I have the pad in a litter box so everything stays inside. He doesn't mark at all. |
