puppy classes Hi,I have adopted a new male 2 weeks ago. He is now 14 weeks. His name is Jaxon, and he is so loveable. I have a dog at home that Jaxon tries to play with. My question is He started to go to puppy class he is so afraid. The other dogs are bigger than him and what to play rough. He just cowers behind me the whole time. If I try to get him to do anything he won't focus. Do I keep putting him through that or just stop. I don't want him so traumatized. Help. |
I wouldn't let him play with big, rough dogs. You don't have to pull him from the class, but if he's being traumatized, keep him separate. Let him slowly decide which dogs he wants to investigate. But long as he's safe, don't baby him if he cowers from other dogs. Tell him it's OK and encourage him to say hi. You want to protect him, but you don't want to reinforce his skittish behavior. It can be a fine line to walk sometimes. Good luck. |
Welcome to YorkieTalk . The first time I went to puppy classes with Nathan , he was very afraid . I let him sit on my lap for the entire class . He just checked what was going on . The second one , he moved a little and the third he was ready . Sometimes it take just a little more time . |
I would definitely keep going! Until he gets more confident, though, I would keep him in a corner by himself and body-block any dogs who come over to investigate. Let your pup know (by your body language) that you will run interference for him and he has nothing to worry about. Don't stress over him not doing everything that the other dogs are doing. Instead, reward - profusely! - calm behavior. When you've got that, reward for small amounts of attention on you : a brief glance in your direction = "Good puppy! You're the best puppy in the world!" and then build on that. DO NOT LET YOURSELF GET CAUGHT UP IN COMPETING with the others. This is all about making your pup more comfortable. If it takes the whole time to get your pup okay with being there, so be it. You can always retake the classes. Let us know how it goes! |

I would keep going, but ask the instructor to partition off an area for the smaller dogs if there is room. I selected my puppy school for that very reason, that they have a separate pen area for the small breeds. Only large dogs who have passed all obedience training (the class coaches, ha ha) are allowed in the same area as the smaller dogs. I would not force your baby to be near the large dogs. Let him take his time. Once he has had his 16 week shots, take him to the park so he will get used to being near other dogs. |
