going potty outside in the winter I have always had paper-trained yorkies. This time we are doing outside training for the first time. So far Jackson is doing pretty well. He still makes mistakes, but he generally gets the idea that going outside means it's time to go potty. On one occasion, it was raining and he didn't want to go outside. The raindops falling on him scared him I think. I'm wondering how it's going to be once we get snow this winter. Does anyone here have a yorkie that goes outside in the winter? Do you shovel out a clearing regularly? Are there dogs that just won't go outside when it's cold and snowy? I'm wondering what challenges we will have coming up. Thanks, Jules |
I have trained Buddy to go outside from day one. It is difficult, at times, when it is snow and ice. I walk him on the grass in the winter. I am not suppose to because I live in a condo complex but the street and dog walking area are full of ice. He loves the snow but hates the rain. When his feet gets cold I carry him and warm them up in my hands then back down he goes until he does his thing. He wears a coat in the winter. |
Loki loves the snow. If there is actually snow on the ground I throw a coat on him so he doesn't get his belly all wet. Otherwise he runs out to the yard fast and runs back in. If we get more than 2 inches we shovel a small part of the yard for him. Rain is more of an issue than snow. For those sleety days we just leave a towel by the door to wipe paws. Oh, one quirky thing is that if snow is evenly covering everything, he will pee in the mulch or sometimes on the sidewalk. But honestly it's not a big deal. |
About that coat thing, did Buddy adapt to it right away? I bought Jackson a fleece coat so he wouldn't be cold, but he just freezes up when I put it on him. He won't move an inch until I take the coat off! |
We got Winnie a winter coat and at first she wouldnt move either...we bribed her with treats. She finally got used to running around in it. As for snow, we actually started training her in winter! She would come right back inside and do her business. She got used to it though, and we would shovel a clearing for her. We tried to run her so she would have to go quickly before she realized that she was wet and cold. Hope that helps. |
Chachi and Jewels are funnier about going out in the rain than in the snow. I have a covered front porch that I let them out on when it rains. We keep our walks shoveled in the winter so they can at least go there with no snow |

funny you mention it but last week I went to put his sweater on and he ran. This was the first time since last winter that he wore clothes. When I finally got it on he really looked embarrased and layed down eyes looking up at me. I swear. I think he forgot he wears clothes in the winter. LOL Carol & Buddy:aimeeyork |
Winnie refuses to move if there is something on her head (like a hood). We pushed the hood back on her jacket and tempted her with treats and finally got her running. But the hood accidently flipped back onto her head...and she stopped dead in her tracks and then proceeded to buck to try to get the hood off of her. But we kept tempting her with treats and she finally let the hood be. It was kinda funny though. |
This will be our 1st Winter with Maci as well, and we'll have to see how it goes. Maci is completely outside trained right now, which is great! She goes to the door, and we know that's the signal she needs to go out. She's funny sometimes because she'll go out and pee once or twice and then she'll run back to the door. However, we know it's time for her to poop as well. So we just have to open the door, tell her "your not done, go potty," and she'll turn around to go back out and poop! Whatever I guess. The rain has never affected her at all, in fact I think she kinda likes it. The snow should be interesting, but we'll get past it. Yorkies are just too smart!! :) |

Resetting, that's funny! :grin2: I hear that about just getting under the blanket all nice and warm again, and then she's at the door again! Arg! Oh well, at least she's trained to go outside! That's what matters most to me! ;) |
Jackson has adapted to his fleece. I spent an afternoon outside raking leaves, etc. and brought him with me. After a bit, he realized he'd have to walk in his fleece to stay with me...so he did. Pretty soon he was running all around in the fleece without a care. Yay! |
Second Nature Dog Litter Try litter training. The litter is made of recycled paper so it's not as messy as cat litter. They have it at petsmart, petco and other pet stores I'm sure.:animal36 |
