new puppy info and prep tips? Hi! I just bought a cute little girl yorkie (name still being decided), and I won't be able to take her home for another 3 weeks. So I was hoping for some info on what I should do to prepare for her to come to her new home and training tips. background info: this is MY first puppy, but my family has had dogs before, and currently we have a male yorkie, Baloo, in the house (who belongs to my parents and in my opinon badly trained .. he potties in the house, barks, all that fun stuff) My main issue and fear, is how to prevent Baloo's bad habits from being copied by my new puppy. (btw .. i just moved back home b/c i just finished college) .. I really want to train my puppy and will put the time, effort, and patience to do so. So any information and tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!! Camly |
I would sign up for puppy classes right away! Unfortunately, Baloo is going to have some influence on your pup, especially if he is pottying on the floor. Because dogs mostly use their noses to tell them where to go, the pup will smell it and go there. So crate train and try hard to keep them separated until your little one starts to get the potty training thing down. As far as barking, a good trainer will have you reward your pup for being quiet, especially when Baloo is barking. You don't want to discourage your dog from barking in general but you kind of want to build in an "enough" command to ask them to stop. You will learn this at classes :) It's also important to socialize your pup with other dogs besides Baloo. This is where training class is also a good idea. |
thanks erin! I really appreciate your reply ... yea I have been looking for puppy classes ... the only thing is that I just moved to Taiwan and everything is in Chinese!! EEK! I'm learning a little at a time but hopefully can find a trainer and class in English. So until then, a lot of this is all on me. I was thinking of doing crate training, more of an exercise pen in my room. Baloo isn't allowed in there so it'd be a space just for her. Also I have been reading, what are your thoughts of pad training, does it work? Another idea of mine was taking her to work with me (my workplace is so laid-back, they don't care, and already had the oky from the boss) - but that maybe more wishful thinking to keep her with me all the time, I fear she may be quite the distraction. hahaha. and oh! I finally decided on a name ... HAZEL! :p |
Congratulation on the new baby!!!!! I'm getting one in 3 weeks as well!!!! Too bad, I thought you live in California..... I live in SF so I was going to say let's have a puppy meet!!! It is good that you can take your baby with you to work. I will be bringing my baby to work for a while until she is little older. I know it will be challenging to raise furbaby when you have another older yorkie who are not well trained. Good luck. |
thanks! and congrats to you too!!! california is home, i'm just overseas for work but w/ my next business trip in cali we should definitely have a puppy meet! haha. it'll be too cute!! have you thought of a name yet? I swear i spent 2-3 days trying to think of the perfect name. lol. Goodluck to you too! |
