At what age do you being training? I kept the runt of Chloe's litter. She is now 10 weeks old. At what point do I start teaching her to sit, come, stay, etc.? I've always rescued older dogs so this is my first experience with a puppy. Thanks in advance for your advice! |
i started training my boston sampson at 12 weeks when i got him, but his breeder was also training him to do some things as well. really i think puppies can start training very early, just my opinion but repetative behavior from you will teach them, they remember and the earlier you inforce good behavior the easier it will be. cosistancy and patience is a key. i started training our yorkie max at 15 weeks when we got him but once again the breeder was working with him. max could already "dance" when he got to us and "high five" and sometimes sit. now he has sit down pat! id say start now, the sooner the better. always give alot of praise!!! i reward both of my dogs with a special treat that they only get when being trained. good luck!! |
Formal Obedience ROCKS! People are just amazed at small dogs performing perfectly! -When it comes to training formal commands and having higher expections (consitency and exactness) then I'd say I begin that at 4 months. -As far as manners and basic control goes (No; Off; Come Here; Go Lay Down; Get In....) I usually start like day two or three after I get the dog home, whatever age that may be. Usually 8-10 weeks for me. :aimeeyork |
She is quite capable of learning basic commands at 10 weeks! Have fun! |
I took Shelby to the puppy training class at Petsmart when she was 16 weeks old. It was a GREAT class. I learned a tremendous amount of good info. I also learned how important is was to Shelby that she socialize with the other puppies.... even the big ones! ( Of course, I made sure that they were not a threat to her first). The only draw-back.......... all the other pups were larger breeds and sniffing butts during social time was easy for all of them.... I wish I would have brought Miss Shelby a step-ladder. |
We started puppy class when Loki was 4 or 5 months old - not soon enough if you asked me! But we continued and took more advanced classes and now we are doing Rally. If you know what you are doing you can start at home, but classes are fun too! |
