Pen & Wee Pad Question
 

I bought a human baby playpen for our 8 week old little guy (very nice with wheels to roll it from room to room. I covered the matress in it with a shower curtain). The breeder had the babies using a litter pan with a wee pad in it. She said they all did great. Here at home, he seems to often go just outside the wee pad/pan. My goal is to have the pen be half wee pad half play/sleep area. The problem is he seems to pee in the play area where there is no wee pad.

My question is can I cover the whole floor of the play pen with wee pads for now and then work down to half? Or will that confuse him? I'd like to use this set up for nights so that I can sleep through the night. I plan on using the crate for shorter times and eventually at night when he is older.

His peeing is very unpredictable at this time. Sometimes he pees a bit every few minutes (excited, maybe?), other times he doesn't pee for a while and then makes a puddle that surprises me that he could pee so much.

I have three human kids and also a horse, and I'll tell you - this puppy stuff is much harder than human babies or horses;) I am exhausted!!!! I am so thankful for all the wonderful advice that this board has to offer!!!

No advice here since i'm going through the same thing AND i also have the same question about covering the whole floor with wee-pads, i know some of our fellow yt'ers will give us some great advice. goodluck <3

In an area that size...I'd only put one pad down. Now might take a few days for them to quit playing with the pads, and pee on it, but it will happen.

I know with Venus, I had to tape the dang pads to the floor, to keep her from playing with them.

Oh, and my breeder said that Venus "knew" to go outside.... Well, I found out that was bullchit! So be careful of going by what your breeder said.

I'd also crate the pup at night, and keep the crate beside your bed. Make sure the crate is just big enough for him to stand up, and turn around in. I know it sux not to get a "whole" nights sleep, but it does help tremendously with training. Now those first nights, might mess up the crate, but once he learns you will get up to let him out...he'll quit. And make sure you do get up, and take him out, or to his pee pads when he whines. This way, he does learn that he doesn't have to mess the crate up, you will take him when he needs to go.

He will catch on to this, he really will! That first week though really sucked for me. I wanted so bad to sleep through the night, but I know that day is coming and getting closer now.

There are many threads on potty training on this website. I went through, and read them all when I first got here! On the first dark blue line that starts with User CP....follow that across to "search". I use the search tool a lot.

I've done this with TWO pups now........ I buy the xtra large wee pad from walmart and use two and cover both sides of the playpen. They wrap right around and tuck in niceley. One side I put their bed and blanket and toys on top of the wee pad (just in case) Mine both tend to go to the fartherest side of the pen to pee. Then a eventually removed the one under the bed. I currently just removed the one under the bed for Tia. Its worked great for me. I love these playpens for human babies! They work great for our little ones when their little! I also put a mamma and her babies in one after she whelped and that worked great as well!

I asked a similar question some time ago. Guess what happened? Over time, Gracie chose the one spot that she pretty much likes to use. I am now down to two pads, one is extra just in case. Something else you might try is cover the entire area with adult incontinence pads (they are reasonably priced at discount stores like Fred Meyer). Then over the top of one, place a quick start puppy pad. Puppy will most likely go on the pad that is scented to attract him.

i would also put mine on it constantly like every 15 mins. or so and say "go potty" and now he understands what that means.

i started harley at 8 weeks too and at first i was kindof nervouse because he would just squat and pee when or where ever but keep being consistant showing him and he will eventually get it.

and another thing...:D i did the same thing pretty much except I had a big crate with one end bedding and water bowl and the other end with a litter box with pad. if i couldnt be on top of him, he was in his crate. i would even try and really watch him while he was in his crate so i could catch him going potty on his pad so i could praise praise praise. i would move the crate to my room at nite. now i leave the crate in my room, that is his nite time spot (same set up) and i have an ex pen set up in the front of the house with pretty much the same set up but more room. i also put a pad out on our screened in porch. if he is not locked up in his ex pen, he will now go to the door to potty on the porch during the day. every time he potties outside he gets alot of praise and treat. he will be 15 weeks tomorrow.
