new experiences traumatizing? i got my yorkie, libby, on friday. she is nine weeks old tomorrow. we have been taking her outside and for car rides, in a puppy pouch, periodically. she does not enjoy it, she seems scared and tries to crawl toward our necks. we want to do it b/c we want a dog that likes to go places. is this too early? also, we use a baby play pen for her housing. she has a bed, food, water, and the floor is covered with newspaper. she has no idea where she goes to the bathroom. she has even went in my hand while i was holding her. how do i even train her to newspaper since it covers her area? if i just slowly take it away, i don't think she will try to hit it. she also whines constantly while in the pen, even if it is right next to us. we tried the "no" thing, which worked sometimes, but when we ignore her she just gets louder and louder and goes forever. this is frustrating. |
Welcome to the world of having a puppy! It is a slow,,long process, it just takes alot of time, and alot of repitition! Good luck, everything sounds good that your doing, It just takes time! Bailey wasnt totally housetrained until probably 8 months old,, they have accidents, gotta pay attention, and learn their patterns,, and they will let ya know what they need. It took me awhile to learn his! They teach YOU! ;) |
forgot to say Congrats..on the new baby,, so sweet, and cute name! Welcome! :) |
cats thanks, i am also feeling guilty having a puppy because my nine year old cats feel cast aside due to all the attention a puppy takes. is this unfair to them? they will not eventually like him, they are not those kind of cats. they don't even like each other, and the three of them have been together for 9 years. |
well, now you're talkin about my house!! I have a 5 year old cat, that totally used to brutilize my older cat.. So when I finally had to put her down,, I thought I would get A Yorkie,, and I thought as playful as Toto had always been with the old cat that he would dig it.... WRONG!! The puppy immediately wanted to play and the cat wanted NOTHING to do with him... it has now been 11 months and they sometimes play , but its more of the cat trying to swat the dog away,,, I always hoped that Id have the cat and dog that played and slept together... guess not.. The cat is just now allowed in the bed to sleep,, for the longest time the dog would attack him as soon as he entered the room.. So they do make progress, but being buddies I dont know if that will ever happen! |
Just like kids mine have always done well when you have a routine...like getting up at the same time and first thing we do is go outside to use the bathroom...I have never paper trained but several have so maybe that will help. Just be consistant and you really have to watch closely. The best training is to catch them in the act and correct the behavior by taking them to where you want them to potty. And when they finally make potty on the right spot give losts of praise and positive attention. |
Nine weeks may be a little young yet. I took Jewels to the vet and on the way she got sick. She was 10 weeks at the time. She may be getting a little motion sickness. My 16 week old boy still really doesn't like car rides either. |
Our Babies Maggie is 10 weeks old. So far, she is taking to house training extremely well. My husband and I are both retired. We take her out when she wakes, after she eats and playtime. Very good so far. She cried a few times when we brought her home, but now she knows the schedule. She loves to ride in the car. We bought her a car seat at Petsmart. Its elevated so she can look out the window. It has a retraint clip, so they won't jump out of it. We took her to Fort Worth the other day (30 miles away) and she loved every mile. I was told the reason dogs get sick in the car is because they can't see out, only feel the motion, which gives them motion sickness. Makes sense to me. Maggie looks out the car window and has never gotten sick. |
