Are Buckle Type or Clip On Collars for Training Ok? We registered Angel for a local Dog Manners & Obedience Beginner class. The information I got from the company via e-mail says, "Bring your dog on a six foot lead (nylon or leather, no flexi lines please) and in a buckle type or clip on collar (no choke chains or prong collars please). I have a harness for Angel made by chattiesmom. Are the buckle type or clip on collars safe? I don't want to choke her or damage her trachea. She's about 3 lb. 18 oz and is a little over 9 months old. If they're ok to use, do you have any recommendations on collars? Please include links and pictures. I have a Flexi leash that can lock in place at a certain length. Would this work at all? Thanks. |
JMO but, I would NEVER use a collar on a Yorkie...I feel their necks are not strong enough for training collars but as i said...this is OMO |
When I took Minnie for puppy training I put her in a harness I told them no collar on her and they understood and she had her training with a harness on. |
I would talk to the trainers. If they are people you want to deal with they will understand about the trachea issues with Yorkies. I hope it all works out for you and you have a GREAT time with Angel in training classes. |
Take her with the harness. They say collar because 1. it's generic for most dogs and 2. you typically can't compete with a harness. I don't like traditional harnesses so Loki learned to walk on a no-pull "Easy Walk" and we transitioned to walking (and not pulling) on his collar. But that's after training him to heel and all that good stuff. I also use his collar when he goes out to the yard to potty but Loki's 11 pounds - he's not tiny! Also, as far as the flexi - take it from someone who trains it is NOT a good idea to use the flexi even if you lock it. You will be juggling the flexi and treats and it won't work. Just get a cheap 4 or 6 foot leash. I like 4 foot for walks because it doesn't drag. I use a 6 foot for training class because Loki has to be walking around me and stuff for Rally. You'll probably be best off with a 4' 3/8"wide leash. Have fun in classes! It sounds like it will be really fun!! |
I don't think I would ever put my baby in a collar as at 4 months old 2.6 lbs and having never been in anything but a harness he is showing some signs that he may end up having trachea issues. Kim and Teddy |
Thanks for all your responses. I contacted the company, and the person who replied said a harness is fine. She said, "We prefer clients use a flat leash as it is easier to handle and there is no chance of the cord of the flexi becoming tangled or harming your hands." I will look for a cheap leash at PetSmart or another store. :) |
