Extreme Difficulty Housebreaking
 

Is their any books or trainers anyone recommendeds for housebreaking. My dog is 1 year old and i really need help. He still goes in the crat and in the house. It is only big enough for him to turn around and lay down in. I live in West Bloomfield, MI. Any recommendations ob books or trainers will be helpfull, thanks!

Are you training him indoors or out? I tried the litter/indoor thing for 1 year to no avail!! I started training her outside about 2 months ago and it is going VERY well!! And yes, I live in Ohio so we do get snow and cold weather, but Lexie doesn't seem to mind it!!

How have you been rewarding your pup when he potties appropriately?

Venus is a lot younger than yours, but when I first came here, someone told me when they potty where they are supposed to, praise, praise praise, and give them a treat.

The treats I use, are her own food too! But it works like a charm. I got her at 8 weeks, and now at 4 months, I say "potty for a treat" and she goes pottying, while slowly walking toward me for her treat.

I've also resorted to potty pads inside my kitchen. I keep her confined to the kitchen too, as its the only room in the house without carpet, and the one I spend the most time in.

May take a few days for him to start using them. First day Venus laid on them, 2ond day, she played with them, 3rd day, I taped the damn things to the floor, and she started using them..

I put my crate beside my bed, that way when I hear Venus whine in the middle of the night, I take her out. Took her about a week, but she quit pottying in the crate. Putting her crate beside my bed, was the best advice I'd got so far with crate training. But that first week beside my bed, she'd wake me after she messed it up. When she finally realized, when she'd whine, I'd get up and take her out....she quit messing the crate up. That took about a week.

I have learned soooo much I never knew with my first yorkie from this website.

I had my first Yorkie over a year before my sister moved in, she trained him to go outside, so there is hope! Don't ask me how she trained him, I was at work!

I know the potty pads, have really helped me with Venus though. She does pee on them, now poop....sometimes misses in the "run around in circles" little thing they do right before a poop.

She does both, outside potty, and potty pads. Now Adonis, my 6 year old just goes outside.

If what you have been doing isn't working then try something else.

Keep in mind he is not doing it to piss you off. You hjave failed to communicate with him, exactly what it is thst you wdant.

Scolding him for going in the crate after the fact, is not going to help. Reward and praise lavishly if he goes where he is supposed to. And make a loud noise and say NO if you catch him in the act of going where he is not supposed to.

If he is going in his crate, how long are you leaving him in the carte. At a year old he should be able to hold it through the workday and over night.

However you must make sure he has opportunity to go before you crate him.

If you work, he should be excersized for a half hour to 45 minutes befor you leave.

We actually neded more information about your life style before anyone can analyze the situation.

You could also try weekend boot camp. Keep him leashed to your side for an entire weekend, and take him to the proper spot frequently. When he goes praise praise praise and treat. the praise and treat have to be immediately, not after returning to the house.

My two are less than a year old, and they only pee every 2 to 3 hours, and only poop twice a day.

They are not crated during the day, but I do crate them at night from 10:30pm to 7:30 am.

I recently purchased this book:How to Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days by Shirlee Kalstone and i must say i've learned about all of the mistakes i've made with my puppy.I wish i would have bought this book a long time ago! My puppy is 10 months old and i have the same problem with her.Hopefully it'll be useful to you as it's been to me!

My puppy, Walt, is 4 months old. We have tried EVERYTHING to house train him to go potty outside. We have him on a schedule and everything. We praise him like he won the olympics and give him treats! He goes so many times and can't hold it through the night. We put a puppy pad down in our bathroom and he uses that so we're okay with that... But we can NOT get him to go outside on a regular basis. ESPECIALLY if we're not watching him 24-7. There has to be something we can do to make him understand!

Is your puppy drinking too much water during the day?How many times does he potty during the day? First make sure your puppy is healthy by taking him to the vet and make sure there's no underlying health problems(bladder infections,diabetes etc...)
If your pup potties at night, you could try cutting off his water at least an hour prior to your bedtime(he should always have plenty of fresh water throughout the day though).
Make sure you take him out just before you go to sleep!!!
Also, to make your life easier, i would suggest potty bell training your dog . My dog uses the bell everytime she has to go potty and it's been a life savior for me!!!
The Yorkshire Terrier is considered to be one of the most difficult breeds to housebreak,unfortunately!:) They can be a bit stubborn. So be patient!;)

With him only being 4 months old he is still too young to be totally trained on anything. Terriers are (in my opinion) the smartest of the dog groups, and with that they look at things differently than other dogs will. They get in trouble for peeing inside, they may see it as I'm not allowed to pee at all, and that just doesnt make any sense at all. :rolleyes: Yorkies are notorious for being difficult to potty train and it'll take months of routine for them to truly understand where they are supposed to potty. Right now your guys bladder is probably the size of an acorn so he can't hold it as well as a large breed or even an adult yorkie. You will have to get up during the night, at least once to let them out while he is still young. Gradually increase the time during the night that he stays in the crate before going out, i.e. you put him in just before going to bed at 10 pm, let him out at 130am and put him back in after he relieves himself. Wake up at 5 or 6 let him out again (if you want to go back to bed then back to the crate again) always take him right outside after taking him out of his crate. Take him out 15 mins after eating or drinking anything, and always right after play time, running around works up their little bladders :D. As he gets older he may or may not start marking, Rizzo never has, still squats like a girl :D makes it easy to use potty pads inside which I dont mind.
Mostly just be patient, you are on the right track, good luck! ;)
