Belly bands Hello all, I am a new yorkie owner, i just got mine a week ago today. I believe he is doing extremely well with using his potty pad. The only time he has a problem is when he has to go poo. usually i can catch him. Does anyone ever use the belly bands or diapers for their yorkie when they are going to be gone long periods of time? If so do you keep your yorkie in his crate with the band on? Just curious. Thanks! |
If I'm going to be gone for long periods of time I put my babies in their crates. I don't use belly band if they are inside their crates though.. They are the safest in there since I can't be with them... :) |

thanks i was just wondering if keeping him in his crate with his belly band would make him think it would be ok for him to pee in his crate when he does not have the belly band on. |
Belly bands aren't meant to be worn for long periods of time. Your pup could pee in them several times, be left being wet, and I think this could even eventually irritate his skin and cause a rash. My pup (one year old) wears belly bands in the evenings - and I keep an eye on him and change them immediately if they are the slightest bit damp. When I work four days a week and am gone for 6 hours or so - he is confined to the kitchen/laundry room area and never pees while I'm gone. He also never pees all night - once he has settled down for the night. It's really only when he has free run of the house in the evenings that he thinks he can pee wherever he wants. If I get him out even two hours or so - he would never wet in the house - but I work evenings in my office - and when it gets later, I just put a belly band on him so I don't have to worry. Belly bands Hi... am trying to figure out how belly bands are a training tool. Is it because the puppies don't like the wet feeling? Is it good to leave them on all the time when they're in the house with you? How do they learn bladder control if the pad soaks up the urine? Will they get used to the feeling? I am a first time Yorkie owner and this is the first time in my life that I've ever heard of them. My Max is the 5th male dog I've had in my adult life( I'm showing my age!) and the only one difficult to train. If they work, great. Don't understand the rationale though. THanks |
I only use belly bands on Timmy when we go out because he tends to want to mark when he's some where other than home. So far he doesn't mark in my house. |
JJL720 Belly bands are not a training tool. My dog wears a bellyband around the house in the evening (that's about the only time he wets in the house) I'm sure he doesn't like wearing a belly band after he has wet it - in fact, he often comes to me, looks up, and barks or whines - and I know his belly band is wet - so I change it. But - does this keep him from wetting - not in the least. HOWEVER - it does keep his pee from going on my carpet. And that is the only reason he wears it. I even tell my little guy - "You're suppose to come and get me "before you pee" not "after you pee." But - he never does...... Carol Jean |
It's like Pampers size 6. You have to take your kid out of diapers if you want him potty trained. You're going to have some accidents, but who wants a 7 year old still peeing in a diaper. The key is to punish when they have an accident and reward when they go where they are supposed to. It works for kids and it works for dogs. I think belly bands should only be used for a dog that has a specific bladder issue that cannot be controlled. Quote:
