6 year old yorkie still not potty trained I am looking at adopting a six year old Yorkie. The thing is she still has potty problems. The vet has given her the all clear. Nothing is wrong with her bladder. Is it possible to teach an older Yorkie new tricks? Like peeing outside or on a pad? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :icon5: ;) |
In your situation, I think alot depends on why the dog isn't housebroken. Did they honestly try to teach the dog or were they half-hearted about it? If they really tried then perhaps something is going on with this dog that will make housebreaking unlikely. In any case, it will take a tremendous commitment on your part of both time and effort to housebreak this pup. I would think that pee pads would not be a good choice for a pup who already thinks that it's okay to go in the house. However, I see you live in Canada... It would be a good idea to find out how his previous owners have responded to inappropriate pottying. |
I got a 10-year-old rescue who had house-training problems when we got him. I just taught him exactly like I would a pup. Let him out and praise, praise, praise for success. Failures get a "no," and a trip outside. Nine months later, he's had periods of 100 percent success but also setbacks. Right now, I'd say he's about 95 percent, and the failures always come when we're not home. He barks at the door when we're home. Definitely try to check her potty-training background as FirstYorkie suggests, but lacking any hard information, don't let it scare you off. Old dogs can learn... |
Thanks for the advice and info. For the most part we don't know anything about this pups background because its current owner rescued her from the shelter. Current owner hasn't had enough time to work with her. Before this home, we really don't have any info. Thanks First Yorkie for mentioning that the dog should be trained to go outside and not pee pad - that makes sense. We're gonna give her a go...hopefully we have the same success as you Alaskayorkie! I have been reading posts about this breed in this section and it seems that change in it's environment can cause setbacks. Maybe that's all that has happened to this dog and she needs a little training to get her back on track!;) Any other ideas or hints on how to train this little cutie are welcome. Daisey is wonderful! Only two accidents! Thanks again for the advice on potty training an older Yorkie! We welcomed Daisey into our home this past Friday and so far only 2 accidents (and one was our fault - she pooed near the back door) We have been taking her out every 30 minutes to an hour and she manages to hold it until morning. Last night she actually held it from around midnight until 9am! She must've been trained in the past but regressed after being bounced around. So for now, everything is going well. For the most part I think we are the ones who need the training! We need to become familiar with her signals of needing to be let outside to mark her spot! Cheers! :D |
