House Training...
 

Bailey is only four months old now and he is totally house trained....he even goes and waits at the back door to tell us when he wants to go...is this normal or is he just an extra clever dog... have you managed to house train your Yorkie this quickly. :)

Yes , this is normal .

well, i say you have a clever puppy... but, they are smart cookies you know..
not always 100% you know, well lexi isnt anyway....

I know my first puppy wasn't this quick at being house trained :)

I think I would have had Loki completely housetrained by 6 months if we didn't run into his bladder difficulties. You do have a smart pup though. I'd start taking some classes soon! Loki is smart too and learns tricks really quick too! We've been taking classes for over a year now and it's really fun!

Dezi was housetrained really quickly also. I would say about 5 months. I was lucky with the potty training. My sister's yorkie took forever. I also think it depends on what type of floors you have. I think if you have carpet, its harder to trained them because they get confused with the pads (my sister had carpets). I have hardwood floor.

what kind of bladder difficulities does Loki have? Duke is having some probldems too

He has nighttime incontinence which is he on PPA for - that means he basically wets the bed. The vet said he sleeps so soundly that he doesn't wake up until he's wet. With the PPA he wakes up and goes and rings his bells, but we are still dilligent about getting him one last trip outside before bed and if he stirs or wakes us up in the middle of the night we go outside, even if he doesn't really want to.

Combine that with the fact that he LOVES water and drinks probably r times as much as he should and well you get a dog who pees a lot. Peeing every 5-15 mins at 8-12 weeks is normal. THe same thing at 4 or 5 months is not. If I left a bowl of water down for Loki he would drink the entire thing immediately. So there was no leaving water for him in the crate because when I did he would drink it all right away then he'd have to pee in 15 mins and wet his crate. The vet never could find anything wrong with him, so we measured his water for a very long time and slowly weaned him down. Now he only drinks about twice what he should (so he only pees about twice as often!). I told him as long as he pees outside he can drink whatever he wants! We just don't fill the whole bowl - he gets little bits at a time so he doesnt over do it and we just make sure to fill it often.

DISCLAIMER-- this is NOT safe to do until you have ruled out medical reasons for excessive drinking. Limiting water in a dog with a serious medical problem is dangerous.

Also, I still think he has something wrong with this bladder besides the incontinence. Like bladder spasms or painful bladder. Once every 2 months he will like have 2 accidents in a day while doing something like walking down the stairs. That's not normal for a housetrained dog, or even a NOT-housetrained dog.

Well Peekas was fully house trained very early but now he is pooping every where he won't pee in the house but he does poop i don't know how to stop this because i can't catch him.

Louis Bear is great on going on his pad. His accidents are usually my fault when I don't provide him a peepee pad or take him outside., but I am learning his warnings. I just love him!:love:

Joey is clever, too! He was fully housetrained at around 4 1/2 months and would ring a bell to let us know that he needed to "go". Smart pups, aren't they?

Thanks for the info Erin. Duke just finished some antibiotics for a bladder infection. He is still peeing ALOT and wetting his bed too. I have to take another urine sample into the vet to see if the infection cleared. I don't think the antibiotics worked!! The vet also said maybe he had bladder stones. He would have to have further testing done but we're not at the point yet. Keep your fingers crossed we don't get to that point :D
