Puppy Biting...Does it ever stop???
 
I love my new little Maggie but will the puppy biting ever stop?? She is now nearly 4 months old and those teeth are sharp!!

Ninna is turning 4 months next week and believe me you I think the teeth are getting sharper by the minute. OOUUCCHH!!! I hope someone here can tell us it will go away!!!!

I haven't tried this personally, but some people on here have tried making a 'yelp' sound when they bite and apparently they stop almost immediately. I know that when Oscar makes Ruthie yelp, he stops and backs off immediately - they don't WANT to hurt you and yelping is how they know that that's enough. It has worked for one member here I know - only had to do it a few times and the dog stopped biting completely.

Oh... and if they don't stop biting, their adult teeth will be much duller and not so pointy as their puppy teeth ;)

I tried something that has worked for mine, you might want to try it. When he would bite, I would yelp like they do when they get hurt. Then, I would firmly tell him "no", but I didn't yell. Just be firm. I put him down and turned my back on him and ignored him for 30 seconds. Then, I picked him back up and handed him a chew toy. Just keep doing this and increase the time you ignore them. I had to do it three times and then Jake understood. He hasn't been biting me anymore, and I've noticed sometimes he starts to, but he thinks about it first. Always hand them a toy that they are allowed to chew on so that they get the message. Most times, they don't like to be ignored and the "yelp" sound really gets their attention!

Oh God this I would also like to know. My Teddy is 3 mos and a half and he LOVES biting my hands. He is starting to bite harder and harder, I tell him no but and try the ignoring thing but he just thinks I'm playing does his own thing then comes back to bite. He doesn't even notice I'm ignoring him...help

when my Pete was a puppy he would bite hard, so i started the yelping technique. I only yelped when it hurt because i dont mind the play bite as long as it doesnt hurt. anyways i would yelp and stop play time. hes now 1.5yrs and he still play bites but very gently with almost no pressure cause he knows play time will be over if he hurts me. good luck:D

I am ignoring right now and Maggie seems to be playing with her toys just fine. Sure hope the yelp and time out works.

Have you tried yelping loudly when he bites you? You have to really get his attention, and you have to be consistent until he understands.

well i have said No very firmly but nada. I did the puppy cry to mimic him lol but I will try the yelping really loud and see what happens..

My puppy school teacher said that to correct bad behavior by banning the puppy from it's pack, in other words, from you and your family. Make biting a felony. The first time, say "no bite" firmly, but don't yell, then turn your back and ignore your kid for 30 seconds. When you return, give your babe something appropriate to bite. The second time, repeat this. The third time baby bites, baby gets to go into the ex-pen, the crate, his room, whatever set-up you have so mom can have a time-out and baby can think about what he/she has done. I have been doing this with Gracie and it seems to be working. I have found it best if she is tethered or left on the sofa, someplace where she can't move away, and if I take any toys or interesting things nearby away immediately, so that she has nothing else to do during that 30 seconds. I have only been at this about 5 days and I have noticed a big reduction in the intensity and frequency of the biting. I too tried the yelp, I even went so far as to bite her back at one point, those things really did not help. Banning her from her pack did. Good luck!

You have to let him know that it hurts. Consistency is the key because once he learns that you aren't going to allow him to bite you, he'll stop. If you still have a problem after doing this several times, then try ending play time with him. Then, wait awhile and play with him again and if he bites, repeat the whole routine again and end play time. The ignoring part was hard for me, but mine caught on pretty quick. I was surprised. Good luck!

My Tyler is 4 months and I truly believe that he thinks that I am his personal chewy toy. I was blaming my hubby for the biting because he plays somewhat rough with him and he comes to me and bites me like I am some type of meat. So, I feel for you and your fingers. I have scars all over my right hand

I think letting the pup know biting hurts you is important; but, the behavior is mostly powered by the teething they're going through. Gums hurt and itch. Be sure 'baby' has LOTS of chewy toys for working those teeth out.

I felt like a pin cushion until Abbie lost her baby teeth.

I haven't tried this but I heard when they chew on your finger to spray them with water in the face and they eventually back away.

We experienced this with Baby Blessing, I found that to put her in the crib with her toys and ignore her seemed to work, she didn't like to be ignored, so maybe the biting was an attention getter ? the best and the next to look forward to is the puppy kisses and those will last forever :) Enjoy your new baby they are so special.
