What Do You Do With Your Yorkie When Your Gone??? I want to potty train Sophie to outside. The problem is that I am not sure where to keep her when I am gone so she won't get confused and think she has to pee on a pad or newspaper? She has an ex-pen, but if she is in that she will pee on the pad or should I just remove the pad? She also has a crate, but I am talking if I am gone for more than 8 hours. If I just want her to potty outside then where should I keep her when I am gone? Also she is paper/pad trained so how often do I move the pad or papers towards the door?:confused: |
I would say if she is pad trained then to leave her in her xpen when your gone for 8 hours or more. Then just work really hard with her when you are home on going outside. As far as moving the pad closer to the door I would say every couple of days as long as she is consistently hitting it every time. Good luck!:) |
I started training Venus to go outside before I started her on the pads, so she does both. When she's in her pen, and I'm in the room she does fine, but when I'm out of the room for 3 minutes, she climbs out:eek: I know this Tuesday I will have to be gone a while, and I don't want to crate her that long, so I'm going to try giving her free run of the kitchen, and put out plenty of pee pads while I'm gone, hoping for the best. When I take her outside, and she potties, I praise her and give her a treat. I keep a baggie of her kibble and Adonis's food in my pocket at all times for this. Her food, is her treat, and she's always happy to get it! While she's pottying, she's watching to see if I'm pulling her treat out for her! I try to take both of my dogs out every 2 hours when I'm home. She's really caught on to the "potty for a treat" thing well outside. I think the 2ond day, she had that down pat! So she now goes outside and uses the pee pads in her pen. I don't know when I'll quit using the pee pads yet. |
More than 8 hours is a long time -- I would expect an occasional accident. I leave my puppy in a large kitchen/laundry room area - for 6 to 7 hours four days a week. He quickly stopped going to the bathroom in there when he was left alone. But - he certainly isn't that good around the rest of the house. When I'm home, if I take my dog outside every couple of hours - we almost never have an accident - but if I don't - he'll pee wherever he wants. So - I put a bellyband on him in the evenings when he is running all over - and I still take it off and take him out every couple hours. But - if I forget - the bellyband at least helps protect my carpets, etc. Potty training these dogs is a pain in the butt. I am sure that if I had a fenced in yard and a doggy door - I'd have no problems at all. But I don't, so a lot of his getting outside and not peeing in the house is totally my responsibility and not his. Darn! Carol Jean |
I have been told that Yorkies can be hard to train. I am glad I found that out after I got Buddy. I guess I am one of the lucky ones. He has been trained since he was 5months old. He can hold it the 9 hrs I am gone! I chase him around the house to get his harness on when I get home and he still holds it. I think his bladder is made of iron. How lucky am I? He was the first crate trained dog I ever owned. I think that was the key. Crate training. It broke my heart to see him in there but my vet said it was only for alittle bit and it would be worth it. I went home on my lunch hours for 8 weeks. It was hard but worth it in the end. I live 13mi from work and cross a major bridge to and from work. Now that it is over it was worth it. Good luck. It does take patience and time. What you put into it you get out of it. HE has full run of my condo and just sleeps all day. |
Are you usually gone 8 hours? Like for work? Or just occasionally? Loki is 11 pounds and I still never leave him for more than 5 hours. I guess it's just part of having a small dog with a small bladder. He either goes to daycare or grandmas or the pet sitter or we take him with or one of us comes home in between or a neighbor lets him out or something. Oh, and he is crated when we are not home. Always. It's safer. But that's also why I don't leave him all day - he's crazy when I spring him from the crate after a few hours. |
