I need some help I have a bunch of issues with my little girl fergie...I just got her a couple days ago and I know that yorkies are supposed to have their ears standing up. Well she is 4 months old and im wondering if she is to old to try to get her ears to stand up and how the heck do I do it if she isnt too old. Also she is a serious barker and I have tried everything to calm it. She barks when someone is here, when she hears any kind of noise in or out of the house, she barks at nothing looking down the hallway...all the time. And when she is in her crate when I am in the room she is ok but the second I leave the room she starts barking and whining...and I think that the lady that had her might of abused her a little because she is VERY skitish around anyone...im hoping that since she is new to the house it will get better soon. Any advise? |
Her ears may not stand. Loki's did not. If you want to try - shave the tips and tape them. Loki hated the tape and his ears are thick and heavy so I didn't try. For the barking, I would enroll her in a positive reinforcement puppy class to help her build some confidence. The trainer can help you with any issues. For now, move slowly around her and remain calm. If she barks at something, just look in the direction she is barking and say "Oh well, nothing there" and walk the other way. Say her name and give her a treat when she looks at you. PM me if you want some book suggestions. |
it might also be that your yorkie is teething this usually happens between 4 and 6 months. When they are teething their ears may go down for a bit. My baby's ears went down when he was teething and came back up after without any help.:p |
Did her ears ever stand? If so, she may be teething like someone else said. Also, she might need the hair on her ears to be trimmed. |
i dont think her ears have ever stood up...i just got her a week ago and i dont think the lady took very good care of her...i just wonder if shes too old to get her ears to stand |
No, she's not too old for her ears to still stand up. However, many Yorkies don't have erect ears and they are just as lovable! I second Erin's suggestion that an obedience class - one that uses positive methods - would be a good idea. Unfortunately, many Yorkies aren't well socialized as pups and therefore can become skittish around new people, places, or dogs. It doesn't necessarily mean that she was abused. Hopefully, her barking will diminish as she settles into your place. |
so if i want to breed her and people come to see her and the pups and notice that her ears arent standing thats not gonna turn them away? and also she was very well socialized with other dogs, not sure about people but the lady i got her from has 9 more females and 3 males all living in this tiny junkyard looking house...thats kinda why i bought her is to get her outta that living situation...but what about her color...i just havent seen a pic of a yorkie yet with so much gray |
Most Yorkie pups are born black and tan, however their color changes as they mature. |
so im confused...she is black and brown with a bit of gray on her...but then i see someone who is sooo excited that their yorkie is finally getting her gray in...what color are they when they are born usually and what colors can they be when they are growing..oh and what colors should she end up lol...so confused haha |
I'm so sorry that you are having problems with your baby, but please do a lot of research before even considering breeding her. :) |
i have been researching off and on and i have read different things about it...there seems to be alot of diferent opinions on it and alot of different ideas about what a yorkie is supposed to look like. im not really having alot of issues with her i would say...it just seems like it because she is new and kinda stuborn lol... |
Hi, I just brought home my first yorkie this week from a breeder in Salem and she is so cute. She is 11 weeks old and weighs already 3.6 pounds!! Can anybody guess how much she will weigh at full size? I am taking her to the vet tomorrow for a check up and maybe she will estimate her size. The breeder initially told me she would be in the 5 to 7 pound range, but I think she may be much bigger. She also has her left ear drooping, her right one stands erect. The breeder did tape them up the last week she was there and I may have to do that again. She is a little cutie and my kids love her but I think she may be a little big. |

Different yorkies coats change at different times. some change early, some late, some not at all. The texture of the hair can vary and so can the growth rate. As for the ears, try shaving and taping them. Their are threads on here that tell you how or you can find it on the web. As for the barking. I agree to take her to some obedience classes, and fask a professional trainer for help. Once she feels mpre secure, she might stop but you really don't wnat to let it go, cause it might get worse. As for her barking when she is in the crate and you leave the room. Are you keeping her in the crate when you are home? Or is this when you put her to bed. I would not crate her when I am home except at bed time, and then if mine barked I would make sure they were tired before I put them in the crate. either walk her or play with her for a good 45 minute to wear her out before putting her to bed. |
thanks...i would love to take her to an obediance class but they are too much money for me...i think the cheapest here is $80 and thats with the best trainer in our area but like i said money is tight...my sister in law mentioned that the library has training videos but cant check out there either lol...(i kinda owe them money right at this min lol). Im hoping that the site i found for clicker training will help alot once i can get a clicker. Do you know if you can use the clicker to help them stop barking? |
