Hi! Hi - I just registered today - I ran into someone yesterday who mentioned this site. Since I just love my Yorkie, Spammy, I thought this was a good place to get good information. And...yes, Spammy was named after the canned food Spam...not that he likes it but because his Mom likes it. I do have a question, Spammy is great in just about every way, but when he sees someone walk down our street that he does not know, he barks and barks. It's impossible to get him to stop until he is ready. He loves other dogs, but again, if he sees one in his territory that he does not know, he goes crazy. Do any of you know how I can calm him down a little when this barking occurs? Other than this barking, though, he's very quiet and just very lovable. Thanks. |
The best advice I can give you is to take Spammy on frequent walks and alsotake him places where there are other people and dogs. Maybe enroll him in a petsmart training class also. My dogs are 18 and 19 months and I quit taking them places because they barked so much. It had been about 8 months since I took them anywhere then I took them to a event with alot of dogs and people. Anyway they were good as gold no barking. Now I take them on two walks a day one in the Morning and one in the Evening and they barely bark anymore and we pass alot of dogs in fences and people. |
hello and welcome to the site.... :welcome4: |
Hi - thanks. :aimeeyork Thanks for the info - I'll try to walk him more at home. I have a store and he's there all day with me with people and children coming in and out all day - but perhaps if I continue the socialization at home, he'll do better. There's one dog in particular that he barks at every Sunday a.m. He's met the dog, but they really don't get a chance to play. Maybe I'll try that too. Thanks again. |
i have not personally tried it, but our puppy class instructor told us to get some lemon or lime juice and give a little squirt in their mouth when they are barking excessively, and this will stop it. she pulled some lemon juice out of her bag at puppy class the other night, and her dog knew what it was, she moved away from her.has anyone else ever tried this. |

Welcome! I know it can be annoying, but I for one could deal with it if I knew it was only at strangers. At least you have a great guard dog!:D |
