Litter Box or Wee Wee pads? I went to PetCo last night to get some pottytraining items (i spent $71 but that's beside the point. I could not decide between the wee wee pads or the doggie litter box so I purchased both. I also purchased the potyraining aid spray, the odor and stain remover, a grooming kit with doulbe sided brush and nail clippers, a harness, and doggie litter. Does any one recommend one more than the other? I haven't used the litter yet, I just put the wee pad in the litter box but he hasnt been sucessful in going in it yet. My daughter took him out of his pack and play bassinet and let him run around tis morning, he peed on her bed and then pooed in my room in front of my computer...come to think of it, he usually goes there when he has accidents so I should put the box there.. Please give me suggestions on what may work best...doggie litter or wee pads... Thanks :aimeeyork |

I have never tried the litter box but I think there is something to be said for the idea. If it works, I think it would resolve a number of in-house breaking issues: 1) the pan keeps the wet stuff off the ground or from leaking through the paper which even with wee-wee pads, does happen. 2) It creates a defined area where the dog is permitted to go to the bathroom making the whole housebreaking process that much easier and CLEARER to the dog. If you must do in-house housebreaking, I say it is worth a try! :cool: |
litter training site litter training Here is a website that I found about litter training puppies. The person who owns the site explains how he or she does it. I don't have my puppy yet, but I plan to try to litter train. Hope this helps with your decision. Susan |

Esme is pee pad trained. We didn't try the litter because I heard about puppies who had eaten the litter, or played in it. As for the pee pads, I kept her in a play pen when I could not watch her, with the pee pad on one side. She was in there WHENEVER I couldn't keep a close eye on her. When I took her out of the play pen I would put her on the pad, when she peed, I would reward her with a treat. I would put her back on the pad every 10 minutes or so. It was a lot of hard work, but she got the hang of it by 4 months. If she has an accident now, it is beside the pad. It seems she misses. Esme is now 6 months. Good Luck! Mari |
I've actually found that using a doggie litter pan with a wee wee pad in it seems to work well. The clean up is very easy. The pad gets thrown away and there is no messy litter :) |
I know dogs who are litter trained (Malts), but haven't tried yet. I am afraid to because it's been such a struggle getting him pee pad trained. He's very consistent with it now and I don't want to change just yet. |
I'd like to thank everyone for your help. Tiny Baci is doing pretty well with his paper training although he will not poo in the same spot. I will attempt to train him to go poo in the litter box only when he has mastered his skill of wee wee peeing. I don't want to confuse him. He goes on the pad while in hiis bassinet and when he has free roam of the house it's just he is still pooing on the carpet. I feel hopeful, we can do it.. it'll just take some time since he's still pretty young. |
Bentley is like 98.9% litter trained! He just hops right in, does his buisness and hops out looking for a treat! He picked it up in like 2 weeks and we really werent pushing the box at first. We had him going on the paper but we had the litter box out from my last yorkie and Bentley just started going in there. For some reason if he had accidents it was usually when he pooped but now he has gotten really good at going in the box. We have one on each floor of the house becuase he can go up steps but cant really go down them yet. I would def. recommend litter training becuase its easy to clean, and if were not home we dont have to worry about him peeing all over the house. As long as your puppy doesnt eat the litter which my yorkies never have I would def. suggest you try it! If you have any other questions please let me know! |
