Bitter Apple ??? Hi all, over here in England bitter apple isn't a common product and as my darling Dylan doesn't seem to mind plain old water in his face we need to move onto the hard stuff ! - can anyone suggest an alternative ? Its my first post here so hello everyone no doubt you'll be hearing from me lots ! |
Try clear deodorant |
Hmmm...what behavior are you trying to correct? Chewing on things? Barking? Biting? And welcome to YT!:) |
Welcome to YT! I use bitter apple for Mimi and it works wonders!! She likes to chew on everything!! Anyway I've heard some YT'ers on use clear deodorant and some say it works. Good luck!! |
Thanks for all your replies - Dylan is a little ratbag at the moment and wants to nibble all the time, he ignores you when you say no so I tried the water spray on his neck/face - it worked for a while but now he ignores it totally ! I think we may have a language confusion here .... when you say clear deodorant is that a brand name or do you mean deodorant that doesn't stain clothes and if so do you mean the spray type as in aerosol ?! wouldn't he choke ? I know I splutter on it in a morning !!! |
No you want clear stick or roll on deodorant not aerosol. It doesnt matter what brand to get. I used to go to the dollar stores and get it |
The clear deodorant roll-on is put on objects that you don't want your pup to chew on. No, you DON'T put it on the dog (or spray it on him)!!! LOL |
I used Bitter apple spray on my yorkie in the early years and you can get it in England...my vet sold it...ask your vet and if he doesn't have it he can order it for you...worked wonders on my naughty. Here's a link if you want to buy it online....very reasonable. http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/a..._Products.html |
aaaah that makes more sense - at first I thought you meant to put the roll on deodorant on the dog - I'm glad someone pointed out the right way otherwise there would have been one traumatised little dog running about smelling of Dove !!! My local vet is very good so i'll ask him - I still feel a little daft asking him about non medical things like I'm wasting his time, thats why its so great to be able to check things out with experienced dog owners who have been through it all before. Wish me luck I've just found a roll on deodorant in my cuboard and am sat here drying off a little before the playing begins. |
I hope you dont want to spray the bitter apple in his face?? I would think it would hurt his little eyes Mine could care less about the water too. My german shepherd tries to catch the water if I spray him. He thinks its a game |
HappyGirl, If your pup is biting/chewing you, I'd treat it a little differently. Here's a thread with more discussion on that topic: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52920 |
Is there something besides bitter apple? Loki must think the bitter apple tastes good. We don't have chewing problems inside the house but he likes to chew on/through his leash when he is frustrated. |
I've had success with white vinegar. My yorkies freaked out the first time they smelled it, and never went back to the place where they were chewing. I just soaked a paper towel with it, and wiped it on whatever I didn't want them to chew. They definitely remembered that smell and taste. Good Luck.:aimeeyork |
