Litterbox Vs. Pads?? I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on which one seems to work better! I personally like the sound of the litter box???? |
i wee pads with a wee pad holder... |
I use the wee wee pads, using the litterbox for Lady wasn't an option since I have a cat that uses one...I think it would be way too confusing for them if there were two.....The wee wee pads work great and very easy clean-up |
I like the idea of using a pee pad inside a litter box with a doorway cut for the small ones (and sharp edges taped with electrical tape) because then they can differentiate between rugs and potty pads. It also helps with those that think they only have to have one foot on the pad, but the pee is on the carpet. Using actual litter to me sounds like a bad idea. For one it is going to be tracked throughout your house. If eaten, which pups tend to do, will cause intestinal obstruction. |
I tried the litter i thought it was a mess. I put the pee pad in the litter box my dogs would not use it so i outside trained them |
i use the pads in the dog litterbox. |
litterbox with fake grass suz |
I use pads in a dog litterbox. This gives you the convenience of a pad (easier to clean) plus in gives you the boundaries of a litterbox (so they dog pee half in the pad half in the floor. |
Pee pads are portable, the litter box is not so easy to haul around. I tried the pee pad holder, but Gracie thinks that it is a platform on which to sleep or play with her toys. Without the holder, she messes up the pee pads royally. She loves to cover herself and her toys with them. I have thought of taping the edges of the pee pads to the vinyl liner in her x-pen. |
It depends what is easier for you. I use a litter box because once a pad is used once it stinks and is extremely unsightly. |
I use the pee pads in the litter box. AprilLove does fine with it. She is also learning to go outside and will go on pads only when we are at someone elses house. I have found (so far) the best pads at containing the smell to be the Arm and Hammer ones. MaryKay |
We've used a litter box with paper litter pellets (Purina). We've had nothing but good luck. It's not been messy (like cat litter which sticks in the cat's pads and ends up everywhere), doesn't stink, and is very reasonably priced. We usually know about when she's going to go and clean the solid waste out afterward, then change the litter every other day. We recently opened our second 25 lb bag, the first one lasted almost 3 months. Make the choice that seems best for your dog's success, they are all a little different. |
I tried the litter box and my dogs basically laughed at me. They ate the litter like it was candy. So I took it out and put a pee pad in it they slept in it! I put the pee pads on the floor now and they use them there. As for the litter box i took everything out of it, and put a pillow and a blanket in it and now its a bed. Its actually Tiffany's FAVORITE bed |
pads in box for those who use litterbox with pee pad, do you find that they still get confused with bathroom matts...etc. I switched to litter box to give him a sure place that is different looking but I have the fake grass in it. Problem with that...the smell. Even the new one I bought without the attractant...it retains a smell. I hate to change our potty system for the millionth time but I'm thinking of going to newspaper with the cross stitch plastic on top (like a crate). That is what I use under the grass. I've spent SO much money. Ugh suzie |
How do you clean the fake grass? You could try adding baking soda (a very large tub at Sam's is only $4.00) on the bottom. Baking soda works wonders at absorbing odors. Then put newspapers under the grass to absorb the wetness and then just change the newspapers.. |

Using both I trained my little poodle to use a litter box with dog litter and it works great, when I got my yorkie I wanted him to use a litter box as well, he is a stubborn little fella and would have nothing to do with it, he goes outside most of the time but needs something if I'm out for a while. He will use a pee pad with the holder, so I am using both the litter box and the pee pads, I must tell you the litter is much cleaner, and goes much further, if I had my druthers and the cooperation of the one I'm training I would choose the litter box with the purina dog litter. Good luck whatever u decide.:animal-pa |

I rather pads. It's quick easy and less messy. :) |

you would think they could invent some kind of dye for their water (that was healthy and does not stain of course) so when they pee on the carpet it would be easy to see and cleaned up...:p |
those that think they only have to have one foot on the pad, but the pee is on the carpet. ((((that is funny)))) |
I thought about a litter box, but I decided to just use the pads. Jake is still pretty tiny, so I don't think it would be that easy for him to use a litter box. I know some people use a litter box with a pee pad in it, which sounds so much easier to clean up. |

Who knows? My breeder has dogs that can tell the difference between washable pee pads and places they aren't supposed to go and she has dogs who can't. Whatever works for your dog. :-) suzie |
Solution I think I am going to outside potty train her as I am home right now, and then do the litterbox with the fake grass while I am out! Thanks!! |
Litter Box vs. Pads My wife and I got Choco, a male Yorky, a few days ago. It's early, but he is already showing he can be stubborn. Trying to establish who is the pack leader in this family, but house training him is quite an ordeal. We are trying to use a crate/litter box combo training, but it is slow going. Any words of advice from experienced "pack leaders" here? Best to all, James:eek: |
not experienced, but getting there. I've had Lexy since she was 7 weeks old, and right now she is five and a half months. For the first few months I litter trained her, and I got her up to 75% success, but then I took a long vacation to my sister's house. Of course she came with me, but then I had to re-train her to go outside. When she got back, she was making a mess EVERYWHERE. I literally was thiiis close to giving up and thinking she would just be a pee and poo monster all her life. Then maturity hit around 4.5 months. Now she goes outside and goes in her litter box when she's in her pen area. I can leave her alone for 8-9 hours and it's okay because she has her litter box. Of course, I don't recommend doing this, but it's been a blessing when I had to stay in my office longer than I wanted. The biggest advice I can give you when it comes ot litter training is to KEEP your litter box in one place and DO NOT (unless you absolutely must) switch materials. I use feline pine mixed with some cat litter. Right now, I'm not too concerned about training her to use the litter box when she's not in the pen, but I'm hoping to slowly do that so I can get rid of the pen and just leave her in the house. |
