how big does my puppy need to be i have been trying to litterpan train my 5 month old puppy(the breeder said he already was....he lied!) I have had him one week and would like to train him to the outside. He weighs 2lb.5.oz. and with winter coming I want him safe and warm. Any suggestion either way? He will eliminate in the pan when he is crated, but otherwise the world is his toilet. I am frustrated to say the least. |
You could try keeping him confined to a smaller area with a hard surface floor. With just enough room for the litter box, his bed and his food, and only allow him out when you can keep a constant eye on him. I started out by putting pee pads down where ever they pottied, soon they began to prefer just a few spots, so I removed the other pads. If they went back to one of those spots I sat their bed or toybox over the spot. Then I gradually removed the pads one by one until they were down to one. This was all in the kitchen, the rules changed as soon as they were out of the kitchen. I recently installed a doggie door and they now use that when they are in the kitchen, I still have to have the pee pad in the living rodom when I let them in there in the evenngs. Hopefully they will get over that as they get older. |
thanks. good ideas. my kitchen is 500 sq. ft. and it is way too big for him. I have trained all my other dogs to the outside and this is new to me. We have a miniature schnauzer that was only 3 lbs when we got her in Feb. and we still outdoor trained her. I find this indoor stuff really difficult. I feel like i'm confusing the puppy but am think of an ex-pen.:aimeeyork |
