Hello, and a question:) Hello all, this is my first post here so I will introduce myself before I pound you with my questions. I am Erin and I just got my first Yorkie named Gus last week. He is so sweet and a great family pet so far:) Here is my question. He hates his crate and I am not sure how to change that. Until that last 2 days he has basically slept on my lap or on a pillow in our bathroom at night. I am really trying to get the potty thing down better and I think crate training will really help. Should I just let him cry? He has plenty of play time with my 2 kids and I have started putting him in the crate when he tires out. He usually cries for anywhere from 10 to 25 min. then on and off the whole time he is in there, about 1-2 hrs at the most. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you all:) |
I just wanted to say Welcome, I don't crate train so I am not one to give you any advise but I know there are alot of great yt's out there that will help you.....:) Good Luck!! |
:welcome4: to YT:exclaim: I'm glad you found us. You will find loads of info here!! Mimi was the same way...all she did was whine at night sometimes to the point that she would make herself sick and throw up...yes Miss Drama Queen! My fiancee spoiled it and would put her in the bed with us...yes she is daddy's little girl. So now both our babies sleep with us!! I know this is not much help but I've heard some YT'ers here say that if you put the crate on a table in your bedroom where your baby can see you it could stop the whining. Good luck and hope someone else can you give better info! |
Hi Erin! Glad you found us. There are several different trains of thought on using a crate. Many of us chose not to. Many, many people on this board, though, do use crates and firmly believe that it is the quickest way to housebreak a dog (assuming, of course, that said pup didn't live in a kennel before he came to you). Many people here believe in the "cry it out" method. There is a different way, BTW, to get a pup used to a crate. Here are more details about it: http://www.clickersolutions.com/articles/2001/crate.htm Another option to speed housebreaking is to tether the pup to you using a leash clipped onto your belt. This way, you are always aware of what pup is doing and you learn to read his signals quicker. When you can't watch him, you can contain him in a small area covered in newspapers to facilitate easy cleanup. So you see, there are alot of options. The choice is yours! |
First WELCOME!! Sadie is my adult yorkie (2 1/2yrs) she was crated when we first got her...she never made a peep from night 1...Lillie (12 wks old) was a different story! she whined for the first 4 nights that we got her...I was up every 2 hrs!!! just like a newborn baby...Now she sleeps all night (in her crate) and is up at 6 in the morning..You will just have to put up with it for a while until she gets used to it... |
Hello and welcome to YT!!!! Is the crate close by where your baby can see you? If he is young, he may just be scared that he is all alone. Also you may try to put a radio close by so he hears the noise so he dont think he is alone. I dont use a small crate, I use a ex-pen, it's big enough for her bed, food, water and a pee pad. I feel with yorkies, they are so small that they cant hold there bladder as long as a bigger dog, so I feel it's unfair ro stick them in a small area and make them hold it. My little girl Lillie will potty on her pad when she is in her pen, and then when she is out of the pen I take her outside. Good luck! |
We have had Reece for just about 2 weeks and I have never used a crate for him, or Darla (6months) for that matter...Reece has two spots in the house where there is a pee pad BUT he likes to go outside YAY!! Both dogs sleep with us and Reece cries to go out when he needs to. He never pees on my bed thank goodness...so all in all he is doing SUPER well..Darla took a bit longer to break but by the time she was 4 months she was totally trained and really was pretty much trained within the first couple of weeks like Reece...just a few accidents now an then but ALWAYS on a pee pad...and it was ALWAYS my fault as I wasnt closely watching for the signs. Reece starts to sniff around real fast when I know he wants to go outside and is starting to come to me whining. I know I couldnt hear them cry in a crate...thats jmo though...you have to do whats right for YOU!! Dawn |
Thank you all for your advice. Gus is doing better and I *think* he is getting the idea of paper training, although he much prefers to go outside. I would like him to be paper trained as well b/c the winters here can be cold. he is also getting used to his crate and really seems to like it now. He even went all night last night with no accidents. Thanks again:) |
