we need help! Lately Layla has been standing at the door to go outside.. i get very excited because she is telling me she has to pee... but then she just goes outside and plays for 10 min.. i get fed up seeing that she isn't peeing/pooping and back in we come... 10 min later... she is at the door again... we did this for hours today. i don't want her to think she is running the show by dictating when we go out to play.. but i also don't want her to have accidents in the house. i am so confused and frustrated. i know she has to poop because she hasn't since like 10 this morning... and she has eaten today... so the poop is yet to come.. but when we go outside.. it is play time  please help!:( |
When Joey was little and I took him outside, I always said go potty. Now he is a year old, goes to the door, I let him out and 9 out of 10 times he does his thing and wants right back in. If he stands there giving me the look, I help him off the step and say go potty. Worked with him. Hope it helps! |
We did the same thing when they were very small -- used a cue word like 'go potty', and we wouldn't play until potty was done........as soon as they peed/pooped, playtime was on as a reward for being so good, and we'd go back inside! |
Here is what I've seen recommended for this problem. When Layla asks to go out (Good for her, BTW!), put her on a leash and take her outside. No eye contact, no playing, no interaction until she "goes". Then, heavy praise (& maybe a treat), the leash comes off, and she gets to play. It will be tiring for a few days, but I'm told that most dogs will drastically reduce their request to go out and play using this method. |
hang in there. training can be tough. :animal36 |
