Collar and Leash? To get my dog used to wearing a collar do I just put it on her and keep it on? Every time I put it on her she seems to hate it and tried to bite at it and scratches over and over and I'm scared she's going to hurt herself. I'd like to get her used to wearing a collar and then try to start training her to walk with a leash but right now she is wild and there is no way I could get her to walk down the road with me. Any ideas or tips? |

If you are talking about a Yorkie a collar is a no no! you should be using a harness..a step in harness...this way there isn't any pressure on their throats...you have to be careful with this.. I'm sure others will post on this thread.. |
I suggest that you go buy a harness...ASAP:D Collars are not good for them since they are too small & fragile. You can fracture their trachea. If you just want your baby to use a nice collar just for looks thats fine but do not use a collar when walking her. |
Do not use a collar.. Get a harness. and just put it on for short periods at first, and gradualfly leave them on longer. If you give a treat each time they will associate the harness with a treat. Let them drag the leash around till they stop fighting it. Then just pick it up and walk with them. Then eventually you can lead them, well sort of. LOL Mine pretty much lead me. Mine know now that when I put their harnesses on that we are going somewhere, so they don't mine them at all. |
Thanks for the advice. I haven't tried to even walk her with it yet I just wanted to get her used to wearing the collar but she seemed to hate it so I haven't tried it again. I didn't know I could get a harness for her. I'll have to go check them out at Petsmart! |

Yes you can....they come in all sizes and most are adjustable. How much does your baby weigh? |
I think she's around 2 lbs. but I'm not sure. I can't get her to stay still enough to get on a scale! |

You can get her an adjustable XS. I know how it is when you try weighing them....I gave up...lol You can also try to weigh yourself and then weigh yourself with her. That will give you her close weight. |
I did buy Kizzy and finally Maggie a collar to wear lately. I dont like them wearing harnesses all the time but since my yard is fenced now, I dont like them being out with no kind of identity on them so I put their collars on to wear with their tags on them. I let them wear them all day and remove them at night. But I dont use them with a leash for walks. then I use the harnesses. But I'm scared they may somehow get out of the fence with nothing on. so they've been wearing them now since Sunday. But walking them with a collar and leash is a no no to me. |
FYI: They sell leashes with a Harness built in. I went to go buy a harness and leash and the lady at my local store asked me if she could recommend something else. She showed me this leash/harness that you put over there heads and around there front feet. you then slide this thing down to secure it. Its great for yorkies since you can't leave collars on them and Harness' are such a pain to put on for a quick walk. It slides on and off even over clothes. Its great cost me $60.00 but it was well worth it. I can post a picture of it if you like. I would really recommend it for yorkies. DMA |
yes please post a picture because that's sounds exactly what I'm looking for! I like the idea that it can slide on over their clothes. |
Try and try again....soon she will LOVE IT!! I have to hide the harness from Darla!! If she sees me holding it it means WALK TIME!! At first she totally hated it and did all the things you described...but now she knows it means fun!! I use a collar for show because I like the the sparkly ones!! I also buy the gemstone tennis bracelets sold by Avon as they are light and look soooo pretty on Darla (I wear them when she isnt hehe) we always get ohhhh look that dog has a necklace!!! She knows she is a princess when she is wearing one too...its funny. Dawn |

it off when she is inside. I would'nt leave it on her incase she gets herself hooked up on something when you are not home. |

http://www.glamourdog.com/harness.html This site has a few examples of it. It is the only website I was able to find that sells them, but they are selling some of them cheaper then what I spent. They are great I can not recommend them enough. It is so quick and painless to put on. These all have a decorative accent I bought one with out it. Put it over there head there fron two feet go between the holes, and you slide the join down to secure. |
If you have trouble finding a harness to fit your little one, I might can help. Each silk step-in's that I make is custom fit. |
