Stumpie on the Run! Stump will be a year old in 5 days. And he used to be so good about not running outside when someone would open the front door. He would run out to their feet and then turn around. Well the passed week he has ran out 5 times. This morning he ran outside and I'm chasing after him in my underwear cause I had just gotten up!!! Lol, thankfully the kids from the bus stop had already been picked up. I don't know why he does this, and I'm terrified I'm either a. not going to be able to catch him, or b. he is going to run out into the street and kill himself. HOW CAN I STOP THIS?!! I don't want him to get hurt! |
Train him. Put him on his leash, tie him near the door, tell him sit and stay (if he doesn't know these, you'll have to teach him them too -- you can do all three at once). Open the door. If he moves toward it, give him your correction sound (mine is uh-uh, for instance). Keep doing this. When he does what you want, go crazy praising and petting him and give him treats if you train with treats. I don't always use treats, but for really difficult or important behaviors I do use treats. Do this for 5-10 minutes at a time a few times a day, if you can. Also, whenever you are taking him out with you, make him sit and stay before you open the door. Make it as much as a habit for you and your family as it is for your dog. Consistency is essential. In the meantime, if your door opens a lot, you might want to leave a leash on your dog all the time so you have a better chance of grabbing him if he makes another break for it. My last dog was a wonderful pedigreed yellow lab that I got from a family who re-homed him because of this exact behavior -- he was a runner. It took less than 2 weeks to get him to the point where he automatically sat and waited when I opened the front door. Good luck! |
I don't know how you can stop him from doing that, but I certainly can sympathize with you. That would scare me to death! I can tell you how you can save him if he does run out. You can either put x-pen sections inside or outside your door. The training to stop his behavior will take longer than putting up these x-pen sections. Good luck! |
He knows sit, but he only does it when he is in the mood. Haha, he is so spoiled, and stubborn. But I think the treat thing should work, he loves his treats. I just need to find a new kind that he likes. His favorite are the naw somes, but he only gets those for good potties! So hopefully I can find some new ones he will ike (he is the pickiest eater!!) Thanks for the help |

Wish I had a video of you running around the neighborhood in your underwear! |
Sorry I don't mean to laugh, but :lol tears :grin2: :sidesplt: I can just imagine you running in your undies and the neighbors whipping out binoculars..haha...I would not only follow the post before about sit/stay commands, but I would also wear pj bottoms JUST IN CASE..lol |
I was unable to get my dogs to sit and stay around the door. While they were on leash I taught them back. They move back from the door so far while I open it.. All I have too say is back and my dogs move away form the door. |
I have this same problem with one of my Yorkies. It is such a scary feeling when she is out running loose on the street. If you have a fenced in back yard, I suggest that you go out the back door if possible until your pup is fully trained not to run out the door. That is what I do and I know that if she does get out the door she is still in the fenced back yard. Thanks for the suggestions on how to train not to bolt out the door. I will give it a try with mine also. |
