problem with crate training I am trying to train Peanut to go in his crate during the day. I work half a day and I am trying to get him ajusted before the kids go back to school. The last couple days that we put him in his crate he has bark so much that he throws up alittle. He sleeps in his crate at night for 5-6 hours until he wakes to go out and potty, then I bring him in bed and he sleeps until morning. I have a playpen I was going to use but when I put him in it he jumps so much I am afraid he will get hurt. Any help would be great. |
Is this a small travel crate, or a larger wire one? |
It is a small wire one he did not like the travel crate so I thought the wire one would be better. I am thinking of trying him out in the bathroom with a gate at the door so he doesn't feel trapped. I think we have spoiled him rotten.:D |
How long are you leaving him in the crate for? Where is the crate located in your home? My little girl would have a fit everytime I put her in her crate, which was in my bedroom. But I moved the crate out to the living room where she could see me coming in and out of the door, and now she is perfectly fine. She doesn't even cry anymore when I put her in there. Also, put a worn tshirt in there with him. This will allow him to smell you all day and get a sense that you are there and alieviate some of the separation anxiety. Leave the crate in the living room with the door open even when you are home. This will help him get used to it. |
Leave the door open and put fun stuff in there, so he goes in voluntarily during the day. Put a treat in there, his food, water, etc. Set a treat in there and let him go get it. Repeat but close the door for a few seconds. If he cries wait until he is quiet for a few seconds. Praise him for being quiet and let him out. Keep working on this until the crate is a good thing! Also, try using Kongs or a special toy he only gets when he is in the crate. |
i crate my 2 month old only when we going out for an hr or 2 max and then we take out of it once we back, we usually play with her before she goes in and we put things in it as well |
You could also try leaving a TV or radio on so he doesn't feel so alone. |
Leaving the TV or radio on is a GREAT idea! I do this for mine, too!   |
I have put toys and treats and his kong and he still crys. He did great last Saturday he was in there for about 1 1/2 hours while we were out. I think he crys so much now is he knows somebody is home. I am going to go out this weekend with the kids and video him while we are gone. He sleeps a good 5 hrs in the crate at night in my daughter's room and he does go in and out during the day on his own. I have the crate right next to my other dog and he loves her. He sure does have me trained well.:animal36 I was thinking of putting him in the bathroom with a baby gate at the door if the crate doesn't work out. I crate trained my other dog and she loves her crate. I think with him being so small and so darn cute it is hard to have him cry so much. I will try your suggestions and hopefully he will get better. Thank you all. |
I think video taping him is a great idea. I have thought about doing this just to see how they behave(or not) while I'm away. |
Rosie hated her crate. Someone on this site recommended the following sites http://www.clickersolutions.com/articles/2001/crate.htm Now she loves her crate so much that she sometimes perfers to sleep in there instead of by me. She probably does that because I move around too much :) |

 That's such useful website. Especially when I'm waiting for my little girl to come home. :aimeeyork (I have never crate trained a puppy.) By the way, do you think it's better to crate train her? Or is it fine to prepare her own bed? Thank you. YT has been extremely informative. I LOVE IT! |
It's all preference. Some people put their dog in their crate all night, but I do not put her in her crate most nights. She's fine being in there all night, but I got attached to her sleeping by me :) The only time I used the crate is when I travel, when I leave her at the vet, etc. I wanted her to have a place where she feels safe and she likes to go to when she doesn't want to be bothered. |
