We've given my dogs benedryl before, and it does make them drowsy.

One night Hobbs' face was itching him so bad that he was just going crazy rubbing his face on the ground. I was in the bed and couldn't go to sleep as long as he was doing this. I felt bad for him, so I gave him a little Children's Benadryl and stopped itching and fell right to sleep.

In my opinion, I think giving it to your little one just once would be fine. Just keep an eye on him for a little while to make sure he doesn't have any adverse reactions. I would not, however, recommend this for longterm use.

JMHO - but please don't do this. Benadryl can have various affects on different people/dogs and you certainly don't want to make a difficult situation worse. Please let me say I admire you for asking this question. It means you really are exploring all options for your little one.. but I personally think that using Benadryl without the directions of a vet for a purpose that it is not one of it's listed FDA approved uses actually constitutes abuse of the drug.

Please take the advise to exercise you pup for at least an hour before you leave in the morning. If you burn off the extra energy and anxiety for the pup she/he will settle easier.

I believe your dog trainer was coming today. How did that go?

We are praying for you and your little one.

I also say I really want to commend you for taking the time and money to meet with a trainer. It just goes to show that you are so committed to your little one! It takes a good person to go out of their way to do this.

Here's to you! :bravo::cheers: :good job::2party: :clapsmile

Whatever you decide to do, please keep us posted on how your little one is doing!

I dont think this is a good idea just to make your baby sleep. My brother has a sister and at Christmas time her 7 year old daughter said.. Mom dont forget to give me my Tylenol PMs. We about died. Dan ask her why she was giving a 7 year old pms and she said she has trouble sleeping. My hubby told her off and his dad was really upset. She had been giving them to her since she was 6 everynight. My hubby said you may be my sister but if you dont stop, I'll call child protection cause that is not right. She just did not want to deal with her.

I know that is not why you want to do it, but it could be dangerous. Maybe a friend could watch your baby while you are at work??? Good Luck. I know you are in a bind but maybe even a doggie day care for a few days. Wish you the best

I was thinking this same thing.

I really dont see that giving the dog benadryl one time is going to hurt. She has a dog behavoralist coming I think later on today. I am sure by now she has already made the decision one way or another anyway

I'd never give my baby Benadryl just to make him sleepy. I don't think that's a good idea at all.

romeos mommy 08-23-2006 05:34 PM

i would find a dogsitter or a doggy daycare.

I was just a thought but i will never give a medication to Royce to make him sleepy . I have to mention SA is a new problem because I took him all the way with me to Tunisia we stayed for 3 weeks he was free running in the house garden, playing with my nephew and niece and everyone else treating him like a baby . When we came back to montreal he started crying whenever I leave for work . I have to let you know " Royce is my priority " I do wakeup earlier in the morning and take him fora 20 minutes walk but i will listen to the advice given to me here and i will walk him for half 45 min to an hour. second I lied to my boss and told her im taking a course and need my hours reduced so that Royce stays alone about 6 hrs a day . third when I finish work I run home and I take royce to the park ( I think since I got Royce everytime i went shopping it was shopping for Royce ie: toys, bags, grooming tools and products ...) almost no social lfe when i go to a restaurant I make sure they accept small dogs in their bag . my mother was upset with me because i spend so much money on Royce and dont take care of myself anymore . So Im more than devoted to him . It went well with the dog trainer today she did an evaluation asked lots of questions and did some tests ...the firts session is tomorrow . I will let you know how it works.
Ps : my kitchen is small when i tried to gate him there he cried, a have a bachelor apartment very small so i dont think he doesnt feel secure ehen left alone his only problem is he wants to be with me all the time .
Getting another dog is not an option because I do spoil a lot and spend a lot and I dont have money to get another dog and spoil him like royce .

OH MAN!! My sister did the same thing with her daughter. When I was visiting her and my daughter was around 2 and hyper from travel she wanted me to do it and I refused. Thank goodness because as it turned out the dye in it made my daughter even MORE wild!! My sisters daughter now 27 yrs old has a drug problem. Could this be attibuted to her having her own little 'medicine cabinet' at 7 yrs old. My sister started this crap with her when she was 2-3 yrs old.

Also, with an animal, I would be afraid of liver damage, if used too often.

IS exactly why we got Sissy on July 3rd, 2006:D
Chloe was one years old on July 2nd.2006, showing serious signs of separation anxiety:(
so..... Sissy was her first Birthday present, one day late:)
IT WORKED

If it's not doable, try the puzzle toys that you hide dog yummies inside. Maybe if he is a little hungry and plays with that, time will pass quicker. Works for one of mine but not the other.

ps as far as benedryl, besides using meds when not absolutely necc. it effects humans differently, did you know in some it has the opposite effect? You wouldn;t want that either, it would have her wide awake & hyper as can be:aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa

I spend a lot on mine too, and after the baby shots are done, the only thing that cost a lot more is double the heartworm pills, since I buy mine by the year - that was costly - but I haven't seen much of a difference in cost otherwise. Now in an apartment, I'm not sure if you could have 2 but if you lived closer I would sit for you, my 2 girls are very pet friendly:)
