I noticed that Royce started humping and I dont understand why he does it ?
Also I would like to know if dogs need to have sex in terms of if it's good for their health and mentally ????:confused:

It's a dominance thing with dogs. Dogs don't have sex for pleasure, and their not in relationships like humans. What is he humping?

Correct 100% pure dominance issue. My female pup humps all the other dogs in the house when they have a bone or toy she wants. She is 3.5# and my male GSD is closer to 100#.

Sex has nothing to do with it and dogs do not receive or give pleasure sexually the way humans do (or are suppose to!;) )

Dogs may not get that same pleasure from relationships that we get, but OF COURSE dogs have sex for pleasure. Male dogs have erections and orgasms exactly like men have, don't they? Why would that not be pleasurable for them? Sex can be quite pleasurable even in the absence of a relationship, can't it?

I think that dogs hump because it feels good. I don't think it's a dominance issue at all!

Now, as for Myriamha's question - do they need to have sex for their health? No, I don't think so. But the desire is there. Neutering drastically reduces their levels of testosterone which reduces the desire (which reduces humping behavior).

I agree I think it;s healthy for dogs to have an erection and ejaculate . It;s good for their hormonal cycle . I think i will buy him a teddy bear his size and let him do that till I find someone who has a female yorkie . As for castration i will never do that to my dog :aimeeyork

Males do not need to have sex to have good life..but they must be neutered, so the "object" of the obcession is gone. It is true males mount objects to show dominate, they also do this out of sexual frustration...when the testicles are removed 95% stop...or when they are bred on a regular basis..my stud dogs never humped anything or anyone..they never "seriously" bothered a bitch not in season..why waste time was my thinking.LOL

PS..never start breeding a male unless you mean to keep it up...or neuter him.

As far as mounting (aka humping) is concerned with neutered or spayed dogs, observations have shown that those (mostly males but sometimes females) who are aroused or excited often times exhibit mounting behavior. This is referred to as a social overture during play. It is believed to have nothing to do with dominance or with one animal trying to convey something to another. Latest research has shown mounting to be a normal canine response that occurs commonly when dogs, especially adolescents, experience emotional states of arousal.

The key to prevention is teaching a dog skills like come or sit/maintain. For example if the dog is going into a state or arousal, they can be cued to stop the behavior and calm themselves down before mounting occurs. With the skills you've taught your dog, you will be giving them something else to do besides mounting. In the event mounting occurs you may need to interfere, but do so very carefully so you do not further arouse the dog or cause the dog to feel threatened.

When mounting is occurring, if you are concerned that one dog is getting annoyed and can not defend themselves or get away from the humper, step between them and separate them with your body. This is only if the dog has not been taught skills with distractions, and is not responding to your cues. If the humping dog can not calm down on their own and is bothering other dogs, crate them or pull them aside and wait until their arousal level lowers. If the "humper" is not particularly bothering the other dogs - let 'em go for it. Look at it as mother nature's way of giving them an opportunity to practice for sex.

There is evidence that some female dogs exhibit "male" characteristics, such as marking and mounting, which is believed to be associated with higher levels of testosterone.

Researchers are tossing the whole dominance theory and rank reduction stuff to the wind. The most recent thought is that humping is simply a social behavior/motor pattern that dogs have. All it means is that the dog is excited or in an aroused state (they are hyper). Females do it too. Dogs do not understand rank because they do not relate to the experiences of others. They are self aware but not other aware. They can not understand "you lose, I win." All they relate to is the present (this feels good) and the past (this was reinforcing and felt good before).

The first and most obvious reason dogs hump is sexual. Intact males can perform humping as displaced sexual behavior analogous to masturbation. The fact that some dogs achieve orgasm while humping is testimony to this fact. This could also be the reason why neutering is not immediately effective in curtailing the behavior in formerly intact dogs. It could be that it takes some time for the neutered dog to learn that things will never be the same.

I only know Yorkies..they mount other dogs to show dominance. As a rule they stand with their paws on the back..The higher the head, the more dominate the dog is..the other will bend down or roll over..when they hump on toys or pillows or other dogs, and go through the motion of breeding, they are not showing the pillow who is boss dog, they do it for pleasure.

If I had dozens of stud dogs who did not hump objects or people, why do you think that would be..because they had real bitches to breed with..so there was no need. I used to see a young future stud pick out a toy or pillow, but once they were bred they stopped it..but they would walk over to another male sometimes and place their paws on his back and stare...saying "I feel like the boss today" but since I was the boss, my boys rarely had fights..the girls were a different story, they kept forgetting I was leader..LOL

Seriously, you want your pet male to spend hours a day humping and ejaculating on a teddy bear? In short time, it will be the only thing he wants to do...so, will the solution be putting the teddy bear away and only bringing it once or twice per week, depending on his sexual needs? How much sex per week does a Yorkie need? It does nothing positive for his hormones. As great as sex is, it is actually possible for canines and humans alike to have healthy life without it fi they choose.

Yes i will give him the teddy bear one or twice a week, I think it's good for their body and hormones to ejaculate . why would i deprive my dog from that ????? and do you think people who dont have sex are mentally balanced ?

I think Mother Teresa was exceptionally well balanced...and millions of others in the world.

I have been married 41 years, so I am not a good person to ask about NOT having sex, I vote for it.....BUT you know..people can never have sex and be 100% healthy, physically, mentally and emotionally.
By making this statement you have made about the absolute need for sex to be healthy reveals volumes...and to say a dog needs sex is 100% NOT correct..but you are intitled your opinion and I to mine.
