Crate training Hi, I bought a crate for my 9 week old yorkshire terrier today. I put him in it and he cried himself to sleep. Is this the right thing to do? I have read different things about this. I have put a treat and his favorite toys but after that first experience I fear he will never go in there voluntarily. Should I just continue cleaning up messes and hope one day he will enter the crate on his own or should I put him in the crate and ignore the whining? how long the first time? I really want to do the right thing but if the puppy pees on the floor much more, I fear divorce. |
crate training does work but it is hard, specially when they are soo cute !! |
What about when they go potty in the crate? What then? |
clean it up and remove everything from crate, blankey toys everything. when they go a night without peeing give them one thing back, they pee again take it all out and start over, sounds crazy but it works also make sure the crate is big enough to turn around but not too big |
what do I do? Thanks for the replys. I still don't know. Put him in the crate and let him cry? or just wait til he feels comfortable to go into the crate on his own? |

I took a bit different approach. I have two crates, one in the ex-pen and one on my bed. The ex-pen crate has the comfort pup dog bed, one of my old slippers and a stuffed toy from the "den" at the breeder's house. No toys or anything else, and no room to find a place to piddle. The door on that crate stays open all the time. Gracie loves to go in there and snuggle in for a nap. Sometimes I will feed her in there with the door closed if she is too distracted to eat. She will cry when I do that, but I won't let her out until she stops crying and eats. The night crate has just a towel and a small stuffed fuzzy toy. Gracie sleeps in there at night with the door closed. She never cries except to wake me to take her to the piddle pad. If you can place something in the crate with your scent on it, like an old sock that has a hole in it that has not yet been washed, it might calm your baby down while in the crate. |
Leave the door open and put fun stuff in there, so he goes in voluntarily during the day. Put a treat in there, his food, water, etc. Set a treat in there and let him go get it. Repeat but close the door for a few seconds. If he cries wait until he is quiet for a few seconds. Praise him for being quiet and let him out. Keep working on this until the crate is a good thing! A 9 week old is going to have a lot of accidents. Try crate training, but don't be surprised if you have less accidents if you wait a few weeks to start doing it. For now, just let him get use to the crate. It's OK to let him sleep in it, just put it near you. We had a crate in the bedroom that we used until Loki was mostly housetrained - then we closed the door so he couldn't have access to the whole house and he learned to scratch at the bedroom door at night when he needed to pee. Soon we put up bells so he could run downstairs and ring them and I'm a light sleeper so I will wake up and go let him out. Oh, and make sure the space is small enough. They should have JUST enough room to lie down. Use a cardboard box or something to fill the extra space. |
suggestions please!!! I have 2 yorkies Ginger and Austin. Ginger is 2 years old and Austin is 9 months old. Ginger was very easy to crate train, would never pee or pooh in her house, just pooh in the back bedroom when she would get a chance:( Austin, on the other hand, will pee and pooh in his house in a heart beat. I can take him out every single hour and 5 minutes later he is crying to get out of his house because he has squeezed a little bit of pee out and thinks that he can get out of his house by peeing. However, Austin was doing alot better about peeing in his box while Ginger was away breeding. Now that Ginger has came back home, he has gone back to his old ways. I do not know what else to do with him??? Suggestions please!!! |
my way of training took 24hrs for her to learn, wee wee pads,i got a little box that looks like a litter box put the pad in there and constantly make her stay in there when she would go out i say go poty and put her back in, 3hrs of that then she pees once on the floor took a cardboard put it under her and pour some of on the wee wee pads and the rest is history she is 2 months old and seems to be pretty smart to be potty trained 24hrs, try it works wonders id say she is 80-90% trained on it oh ya, u need to praise her/him when she goes and give a treat if you have or just say good girl good girl |
