Best training book? Hi! What's been the best book you have found for training your yorkie? I got Yorkies for Dummies and thought it was helpful overall but now am looking for good training info. Thanks! |
It's not a book but I bought this training DVD called "Train Your Dog - The Positive Gentle Method" and it is great. It only teaches the basics but I was able to teach Tuffy all of them in no time at all.. in fact he learned how to go into a down in about 15 minutes. |
How old is 'too old' to train tricks? Our lil girl is about 10 mos old and so far she only 'sits pretty' I don't know anything about training dogs! |
They are never too old to train. I got Sandy at around 6-8 years old (we're not sure, she's a rescue) and was able to train her to do tricks :) I took her to a class and worked with her myself. It took some patience but the rewards are well worth it! |
I have went to the library and got yorkies for dummies before I got Pebbles and that book has many interesting facts and info and I also bought on EBAY a computer cd about training you dog!:) |
Dog Training for Dummies is a great book... :) |

I enjoy the positive teaching methods in "The Loved Dog" by Tamar Geller and am serial reading a couple dog books now, "Decoding Your Dog" and "The Dog Who Loved Too Much", both of which I'm loving. 'Decoding' is a maybe a little agenda driven. All three place heavy emphasis on first learning about canine nature and why/how behavior issues develop and how they learn/heal best, through positive reinforcement of wanted behavior. Learning how to motivate your dog to do what you want will be your biggest challenge and the keeping yourself motivated to motivate your dog will be your second biggest and when all else fails, fake your happy motivation but always keep your dog WANTING to win for you by doing what you teach him with happy praise and a lovely bit of kibble. Later your dog will want to please you above all else for that lovely feeling of something worked for and achieved. |
