newby needs advice hello, everyone, great forum. Anna Belle is 5 months old, we have carpet, so at night she is in a crate that is approx 18" wide and 24" long, she typicaly wakes me up with a wimper or a soft short bark to go out, she has had an occassional accident during the night but it has been a week or so since that happened. during the day she stays in our kitchen in her pen, she has a fold up pen that is approx 2'x6' she pees and poops pretty often in this pen, she is verbally scolded when she does this. we will take her outside several times through out the day, we give a treat and praise when she does potty outside, but sometimes she will do a quick squat and come looking for the treat. we bring her inside and she pees in the pen 15 minutes later, this happens several times through out the day. we really don't want to do the pee pad thing, we prefer the business be done outside. where are we going wrong???? i have heard some say the crate needs to be smaller, what about the pen, should it be smaller, if so how small?? any other advice will be greatly appreciated. thanks, jeff and julie grant |
here is what I would do. do away with the pen. have her in the crate at all times besides going potty, eating and playing it sounds mean but it works. |
Hello and welcome to YT! This is a wonderful forum with great people and exellent advice! Puppies cant hold there bladder for long periods of times and a Yorkie in particular. I also have a pen and my Lillie is being pee pad trained, for one it gets very cold her in the winter and this will save her from having to go outside to potty in the winter time. But if your gong hoe on no pee-pads, then you should keep her in a very small crate (enough room for her to turn around and lay comfortably) and keep her in it at all times, only take her out to potty and eat, make sure you are giving her drinks frequently, but it will take a good week of this, but it should work. Good luck to you and I look forward to seeing pictures of your little one! |
We did crate training and it works, but it does take a while. Loki was totally crate trained (meaning no accidents in the crate, as long as we didn't leave him too long) by about 6 months old. He was totally housetrained by a year. We had some setbacks like medical issues and stuff but we stuck through it. You will have accidents in the crate. You can cut down on them by letting her out OFTEN. I mean like every 15 mins. She is probably not emptying her bladder each time if she is just squatting to get a treat. Plus, they really can't hold it. That all comes with maturity. Right now, just treat her like a potty training toddler and have her "try" every 15 mins :D I would definately eliminate the pen and use the crate. You can give her more freedom after you are sure she is empty (try going on a little walk, let her pee in every yard, she'll be empty!) Then back in the crate and start over. Yes, it's a royal pain. But it only lasts a couple months and then once your dog is housetrained you don't have to worry about it!!! :animal-pa |
