i have heard from several different peopl that they dont pee or poop in the same place, we have a couple different pads set up and peanut seems to pee in one spot and poo in the other.

Ello. Here is what I have tried and seems to be working. First off, Jack is from a "breeder" and I say "breeder" because I whole-heartedly believe she is a backyard breeder borderline puppy mill. She never takes the puppies outside (not even to begin potty training). So we started at spot numero uno. I have read that as a general rule of thumb is that a puppy can hold an hour for the number of months he is. Example Jack is 8 months so he should be able to hold it for 8 hours, which he can but it's a stretch and kind of pushing it.

Jack does not use potty pads as he doesn't get them. We started by taking him out every four hours and as it neared the fourth hour we would confine him to the couch as long as we were on it so he couldn't run around and find a spot to pee. We began to lengthen the time every week and now he can generally hold it for about 6 hours but usually 7. We have limited his water intake to meal times (twice daily 1/4 cup each meal time) and if he is chewing. If he drinks more water because he was chewing we do not make him wait until the 6 or 7 hour mark. When we first began potty training him, we would give him a small chunk of cheese when he peed outside and pooed not to mention we shouted and hooted and made a huge deal when we went outside and he just loved it. We even let him run around on the leash and played "I'm gonna getchya" (which he loves). If he goes in the house and we do not see it, we merely clean it up and ignore him for a few minutes. It he pees and we catch it, we say ah-ah in a loud voice and move toward him. This usually causes him to stop and we can rush him outside so he can go. When he does go outside, we reward him for the behavior. He still occasionally has an accident but it is generally at the fault ofthe human and we admit it. He has been getting better at alerting us he needs to go out but sitting in front of us and just staring. Also if you ask if he needs to go potty in a high pitched voice he will turn his head if he needs too. I don't know how he learned that but it works. And if he doesn't he wont do anything which usually means he wants us to play with him. He's so friggen intelligent.

my dog was not house broke when
 

maggie was 2 years old when i got her. she was not house broke. I started scolding her when she soiled on the floor. We got a chipom they both went out togerther. I taught maggie to potty on command she got a treat for going out. you have to be prestant. Keep giving them a treat(milk bones) I could take her anywhere tell her to go pottie even if she didn't have to she sguatted she was a good girl.:animal36

I wish I could give advice. Unfortunately, I am in the same boat. My 13 week old yorkie will pee pee on the wee wee pad but poop everywhere else. I don't get it. It is frustrating but I just keep at it. YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!

My Yorkie is 1 1/2, he is still not completely housebroken.

I am so confused and upset, he will do really well for about 3 weeks, then he will revert to pooping in the house.

He knows it is wrong but doesn't seem to care. We have a doggie door that he is able to go in and out of anytime he wants. He will pee without any problems, but pooping is the very difficult one to get him to do everytime.

Have you tried rewarding him for 'pooping' where you want him to. Make it a big deal. In our house the "big" treat is cheese or chicken.

Does he have a certain time of day that he goes poop? Mine has a pretty set schedule...first thing when he wakes up and about 4 in the afternoon. When he has an accident is it always in the same spot?

Does he have free run of the house? Until a few weeks ago Leo NEVER had free run of the whole house. He was really good about having NO accidents downstairs. He could not be upstairs alone... He could only be upstairs if one of us was watching him. Our puppy is 18 months and I feel like we are finally potty trained in the whole house.


This may sound really wierd... but works!! Dog naturally don't want to go potty where there food is. So, every night I would sprinkle food around the house.... a couple of pieces in each room. Leo really liked to pee on the stairs...so I would put MORE food on the stairs. I thought it was really weird but I did try it and IT WORKED.

i reward molie when she poops in her potty box. She is too little right now to go outside, I have two cats and a big dog, and it is too cold now. But she will go over to the box and want in. or come to me. I got those milk bone trainers. I make over her when she does her bizness in the right place. And she gladly goes over, she has an accident once in awhile. I have to be persistent and stay right on her.

well, i'm new at this potty training thing. i've had jackson for almost 4 days now and he's actually been doing very well considering his age and me with no experience with the potty training. i've done my research and luckily, i'm out of college until the end of january to work with this little guy.

i've got him on a pretty set schedule so far... he wakes up around 7-7:30am, i pick him right up out of the crate and put his collar/leash on him and bring him directly outside, through the same door, around the same spot outside. so far, he has peed every morning! and he pooped twice outside. and every time, i bring a little doggie treat and praise him a TON and them let him have about 20 minutes of playtime inside with me in my room which is gated off. he usually eats & drinks during this time too. then i'll usually put him back in his crate and go back to sleep for another hour. he whines at first but quickly goes to sleep.

then we get up again, this time around 8:30 - 9am, i again take him directly outside to go potty and bring treats and praise. and then he gets more playtime where i watch him for about an hour and let him run in his little gated room.

this continues for the rest of the day where i'm constantly letting him outside, giving him playtime, back in the crate, etc. and whenever i leave the house, he stays in his crate obviously.

this morning, i took my eyes off of him for less than a minute and he peed and quickly after pooped in the house! but that totally my fault and i didn't blame him. i didn't catch him peeing so i just wiped it up but i caught him pooping and quickly said "No!" and brought him outside and said "go to bathroom outside!"

he's a really smart little man, i can't complain too much, lol. and the times when he's peed in the house, he usually goes straight for the pee pee pad which was great. if he can be trained both outside ad on the pad, that'd be great.

he definitely constantly needs to be near you though. if you put him in the crate, he barks obnoxiously for about 20 minutes before stopping and it's quieter and more of a whine if i'm near him while he's in the crate, but he eventually will fall asleep.

I had Fiona completey house trained at 3.5 months! I was shocked, considering I am 26 yrs old, and she is my first puppy since ive moved out of my parents house! Anywhos, I can tell you that Crate training is AWESOME! :D:D

As soon as you let your little one out of the crate in the am, first thing is to take them outside. As soon as they do something, you want to come up with a command word...but you are going to be saying this word while they are in the process of doing something, not before, not after, and make sure you reward, reward, reward when they do something!

When Fiona goes pee pee, i would simply say " good pee pee, good girl" all while she is doing so......

make sure you are consistant with this, and if you have others in the home, make sure you are all saying the same command word.....

for some reason, when i tell fiona to squat, she pees now, so she is doing awesome, and pretty much i have her on command!

its sooo easy, and so fun when they finally do so!

first thing in the am, when your letting them out, if your out there for 10-15 min and they do one over the other and you know they have to do both, come back in, and put the pup in the crate for another 10 min, and try again! :rolleyes:

Thank you for that. I have been having a problem things have changed, daddy who use to take her out has changed his shift and now goes to work in the am. So I have to take her out. I will do that.

I have heard, that dogs will not soil there beds. So my molie ann, sleeps on my waterbed. She conciders this whole room hers. she will pea on the pea pad. I put the pad in my little bathroom, she goes in there. She will go in that room sleep on the bed for 1 hour. Then I take her outside and she does her bizness. Watch them when they go outside, we have two Redtailed hawks, and there young looking for food. Also the owls are bad, about flying. These little guys are so tiny that I worried about the cats, but molie soon started chasing the cat and they ran away. Most mice do not chase the cats. Molie looks like a big rat sometimes, but she chases them and they run.

OMG!!!

I cannot seem to house train JC. UGH!! I'm becoming so frustrated.

He is perfectly trained when I'm in the house, but the minute I go outside or leave for awhile, he just pees and potties. Not once, but sometimes 3 times!!

Now I know he can go a much longer time than I leave him, but I can step out for 10 minutes and he goes.

I'm concerned because I am starting to smell it in the house and that is something I cannot tolerate. I love him so much, but he's a year old and still not trained. I'm afraid he's just never going to get it. I am moving into a new house in September and my fiance will never accept this.

I've tried the crate, the pee pads, (which he just shreds), confining him to one small room and taking him out every hour. He's really pretty good when I'm home, but is he going to do this forever?

I can't take him everywhere with me. He's going to have to stay alone without releasing himself every time I walk out the door.

PLEASE, PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

My advice is start your own thread, and give more details such as age of your dog, you'll get more specific advice that pertains to you situation. From what you've said, you need to remember, one of the primary rules of house breaking is to clean up those urine spots, dogs noses are much better than human noses, and if you can smell it, you can be sure he can. You must clean up those spots with en enzyme cleaner, it actually eliminates the protein found in urine, and the protein is what causes the smell. You don't want to use something that masks the odor, this only works for human noses; dogs can still discriminate the different smells. Remember a dog is "compelled" to return to the spot where he smells urine; you have to clean the area properly. The only thing in the house that should have a urine odor is a pee pad.
