housebreaking My two sisters will be 5 months in about a week. I don't trust them for a minute and read all your posts looking for encouragement. Now I realize not to expect them to understand until maybe at earliest another month. OK, I'll hang in there. But I am tired!!! |
Housebreaking Hi. Well, it's been a while since I posted that and JC is finally housebroken! YAY!!! Someone told me to use Nature's Miracle Puppy Pads, which I had and it didn't work. But then someone else told me to spray Simple Solution Puppy Aid Training Spray on the puppy pad and he was trained within a week!! He still goes outside, but I don't have to watch him every minute anymore and I get to sleep in a longer. I hope it might work for you. Good Luck!! |
I am new to this site. I have my girl using a cat litter box. The old kind with the lower sides. When I got her from the breeder, they had her going on paper. So I got the box and put the paper in it. I would start by getting her used to it when she started to give me those little "signs" that she needed to go. Put her in the box and say"pee" and had her stay in the box until she "peed" . I cheered her on and gave her a treat. She got the idea. Then she started to do her"bobo" -:-) in the box. She gets so excited` she know she will get a treat. I am now using newspaper pellets. They take in more liquid than just paper. It took her a few times and got used to that also. I don't have to worry about taking her out at all. If she needs to go at any time she goes to her box. She will go to the "bathroom" outside when we go on walks. But no late night runs to outside to go to the bathroom. I love the box idea for toy/small dogs. I don't have to worry about anthing getting her. Or getting her outside in time!!!!!! |
It is so nice to hear what others have been doing with the training. I had my 4 month old girl trained with the Rachel's dog box. Then my hubby made me mover it. She seems to go pee in it all the time, but I am having problems with the POOPing part!! This is getting to old!! I have a round cage that I can make smaller and she will still go poop outside the box and then sometime walk in it making a mess. I am not sure how to get her to go poop in it, she goes pee all the time! When I take her outside she goes very well, she even sometime wakes me up to go out in the morning. |
Housebreaking the Yorkie About the "pooping" part. With my girl I had to watch her. Usually after she eats and in the morning- normally they give you some kind of sign they got to go-I would pick Aubree up and put her in the box. She would go. After a few times she got the idea. She will go outside also, we have a walking trail we go on and she has done both of her duties there.She sleeps with me at night I did keep the box in the room - just in case she needed it- now it is just outside the door. She had'nt needed it in a while. She sleeps as long as I do and goes when I get up. She does get a small treat when she uses the box -so she knows that she gets rewarded when she does. It is funny she wants to make sure someone sees her she she will get her treat. So try a treat and watch after eating and in the morning. You know when they got to go ! Housebreaking an older puppy We are the new parents of an almost 8 month old puppy. Kobe Jack does not go in his crate, which we are thankful for, but he doesn't seem to get that outside is the place for that! He goes out after eating, drinking or play or simply because it's been a while. If he hasn't peed or pooped, he does not get a treat when he comes back inside. Unfortunately, he will go after he comes back in. We have tried waiting a few minutes and then back out but that has failed too. We are unaware of his training habits before he came to live with us. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |
The only suggestion I can give is patience and persistence and a belly band. I got Moses when he was 10 months old and I was told he was paper trained. He was not. He would not go when he was on a leash so walking him was out. Eventually, I put a pad down in our bathroom and would close him in there (with me) and he would go in there. As the months went on, he was allowed outside off a leash and would go, but then he started running, so back on the leash and no going. I finally put him on a long lead and just held the end. I guess he didn't think that was a leash, 'cause now he will go. I have now had him 9 months and just now is he giving signals that I can recognize to tell me he needs to go out. But, he will not go if there is another dog out with him. So, I have to let Isabel and Moses out, then let Isabel back in, then he will do his business. And if he has to go and you miss his signal, he goes back to the bathroom and goes on the rug. Izzy, who is 7, will pee every single time you take her out, but she will also go on a pee pad or a throw rug and nothing I have been able to do will stop her. I used to keep throw rugs down the hall, but one step in cold pee and those rugs were gone. |
I am frustrated as well. I have two puppies which makes it more frustrating...They are both about 4 months and still not potty trained. They go to the bathroom when outside, but they also have accidents inside. They do not let us know at all when they got to go. We are going to try to bell thing I am just thinking they will play with it. We were going to do pee pads but the younger one just shreds them, so much for that. I don't know....We have only had them for a little oer a month but I am just ready for them to be trained. I feel like we have progress with one, but the other one all the sudden hates going outside...imagine that...we are hoping it's the snow. But if anyone has any tips....I would greatly appreciate them as well. |
Hi I need help. :) Pablo is house trained for the last 18 months and now has started to wee in the main bathroom right on the toilet!!! It is very bold, and I never actually catch him in the act so it is hard to discipline him even though he knows it is wrong. I have bleached every where numerous times but this problem still persists,,, why is he doing this? |

The bell on the door works great with some of my fur babies. Miss Sque 'Kay Doo is very good at it and at times she rings it just to get me out of my chair. I'm going to start the bell method on my little poodle next. The other small dogs I have use newspapers where and when they are supposed to. |
New Girl I just rescued a tea cup yorkie and she is NOT house broken. She seems to be pretty old too. Is there any hope of house breaking her??:animal-pa |

Apt solution 1 Attachment(s) I live in a loft, with no backyard. And the area we live in isn't the greatest. So I came up with an idea to put a doggy door in the front window and build an enclosed outdoor kennel for Izzy to have to hopefully help potty train her. It has definitely helped. I will post a picture of it in a few minutes. I had it built out of that plastic white lattice so she can't chew through it, and it looks pretty nice. The owner of the apts loved it . I can even grow vine flowers to dress it up. It has big stairs leading down she can sun bathe on and I don't have to worry about anyone stealing her. I can take down a section to clean it out when needed. And when I'm gone she doesn't have to hold her bladder. Oh and I even built a little balcony that only the cats can jump to for them to go in and out as they wish, too. All my animals are loving it. She took up pooping outside almost right away. Now we're working on her adding peeing to that equation and she'll be set. Just an idea for people with busy schedules and very little yard to work with. I took the pictures at night unfortunately. |
Help!! I HAVE AN 11 WEEK OLD YORKIE/MALTESE MIX NAMED GYPSY. I AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH HOUSE TRAINING MY SELF. HERES THE RUN DOWN ON OUR LIFE...LOL WE WAKE AT 6AM TAKE HER POTTY SHE DOES NOT HAVE A PROBLEM POTTING OUTSIDE SHE WILL PEE AND MOST OF THE TIME POOP OUTSIDE BUT WE CAN COME BACK IN AND SHE WILL PEE IN THE HOUSE. NOW I DO CRATE HER DURNING THE DAY AT TIMES WHEN I CAN NOT KEEP ALL EYES ON HER AND SHE SLEEPS IN HER CRATE FOR NOW AT NIGHT UNTILL I GET HER HOUSE TRAINED. I DO WORK FROM 7AM TO 5PM SHE COMES WITH ME EVERY DAY TO WORK CRATE AND ALL TOYS SHE HAS HER OWN SIDE OF THE OFFICE, PEOPLE COME IN ALL DAY LONG AND PLAY WITH HER ALSO TAKE HER POTTY BUT SHE IS STILL POTTING IN MY OFFICE AND HOUSE...I FEED HER THREE TIMES A DAY AND GIVE HER WATER IN BETWEEN... WHAT MORE SHOULD I BE DOING I MUST BE DOING SOMETHING WRONG....HELP PLEASE :confused::animal-pa |

Your dog sounds like the perfect candidate for this type of crate! He will choose to "go" where he does not sleep. Until he gets used to going in his apartment, he should be crated at all times that you cannot watch him closely. When you CAN watch him closely, start taking him outside every time he eats, wakes up, or plays, and every two hours at other times. If he does goes outside, give him a treat immediately and say, "Go Potty. Good Boy!" every single time. With patience and consistency he should begin to catch on fairly quickly at his age. 1 Attachment(s) I adopted my 4 yr old girl a few months back...Piper now does very well at letting me know when she needs to go out (drops to floor, turns her cutest little head and does a low grrr-ruff). However, when at work, all bets are off; in order to alleviate my frustration I bought a vacuum-size steam cleaner (@$100) which simply helps keep the mistakes in perspective! |
I am in the same boat with the rest of you. Madisyn is almost 4 months and we are still going out every hour during the day. I have a 13 year old yorkie and she was not this hard to train. My older yorkie is 10 lbs. And Madisyn is only expected to be 5 to 7 pounds. I have heard the smaller the dog the more often you will have to take them out. Does anyone have experience with a smaller adult yorkie? I am wondering, once she is trained she will not have to go potty every 3 to 4 hours or will she be able to go longer like my bigger yorkie? |
Update So while they do still use their outdoor kennel when they want, they've just gotten lazy and still choose to go in the house. Toby went for two weeks of i house training and they said he did very well there, but he came back and instantly started marking again. And I had steam cleaned and sprayed with all the right stuff to erase the smells . Carpet and walls both. But he just started off like he left. Actually, he got a little worse concerning his excite pee. But now that he's been back a few days that has calmed down a bit. But it's still excessive . I'm thinking I'll just put up a gate at the stairs and get him one of those stupid cloth things that go around his waist. I guess I get distracted too much or he's just gotten too quick cause even when I tether him to me he manages to mark on things without me catching him. And yes he'll hold it in his kennel. Mind you the kennel is attached to their doggie door to go outside, but if he is out of the kennel he won't bother to go outside. I'm pretty sure he just hates me. I'm just being dramatic really on that, but sometimes it feels like that:cry8: |
