Invisable fence
 

I am thinking about getting a invisible fence put in for my yorkie and two cats. I had one put in at my other house and it worked fine but i had a chow
then a much much bigger dog.

I called the guy that installed it he said could use a cat collar for my yorkie.
that it wouldn't hurt him.

I am not sure if i want to take the chance of shocking my furbaby.
he said to use flags to show him his boundaries and he would hear a beeping sound first if he gets to close to the line to let him know he's to close before he would get shocked

Wondering if any one else has this for their yorkies. or any remarks about doing this.

I would not do it. If you read the precautions for those types of fences, they all say that they are not recommended for use of a toy dog like a yorkie. I don't like the idea of shocking a yorkie. They already have soft tracheas that can be damaged easily with a regular collar and to put a collar that would shock a yorkie, seems risky and cruel. Plus, a yorkie is such a small dog, the fence may stop your yorkie from leaving the property but it does not stop other dogs or animals from entering the property which is very dangerous since it does not take much for another animal or dog to hurt or kill a yorkie. With bigger dogs you don't have to worry about the shock hurting them or other dogs or animals coming in your yard and killing your big dog, but you do have to worry about it with a yorkie. JMO

:eek: I would't do it either. I have seen smaller dogs get zapped and it isn't a pretty site. Also, GOD FORBID if an electrical storm suddenly popped up! I have heard of dogs being killed because of this...I say get a run or just tie them out. You probably wouldn't want to leave your furbaby out alone anyway. JMO

I don't have an invisible fence, however I do have neighbors who have one -- they also have small dogs, who do not respect the fence and spend a good portion of their day visiting the neighbors. The major fence violator KNOWS that she will be shocked but will bunch up and make a wild dash to freedom.

yikes . i wouldnt. yorkies are too small. and regardless of the size of the dog once they get so far past the fence line it stops shocking them and guess what if they come back in it shocks them again. I really dont see what this teaches!

Personally, I wouldn't do it. My daughter had a friend whose parents used an invisible fence for their dog, which was much bigger than a yorkie. Once when we were at their house for a cookout, someone asked if the shock hurt. They said it doesn't hurt and, of course, there's always that one person who wants to know for themselves. We formed a chain of 5 people, and I was at the end of the chain. The first person had the collar in his hand, and all of us felt the shock. Like I said, I was the last in the chain, and I felt the shock and I thought it hurt. JMO

I would not do it. To me, it is wrong and abusive. A real fence is the best thing for a little one.

My dad is actually in the process of having an electric fence installed. (he has only chosen to do the I.F. because Harley is the worlds BEST escape artist and can vamoose through any actual physical fence!:rolleyes: ) He did his research and found the best. The brand is "Invisible Fence" and when they come to install it they stay all day teaching you and training your pets one by one. The collars electricity can be turned up or down according to weight. My dad absolutely adores my Harley bear and looked for the safest option for him since he barely weighs 10lbs. I spoke to everyone I work with and even our head director(HUGE animal activist and animal protector- grandson to Anna C. Briggs!) uses "Invisible Fence" and uses it on his 155lb german shepherd beast and on his 8lb weiner doggie named Gelphie! Basically I would be really careful about WHAT BRAND you use because I have read and heard awful things about incidents with off-brand fences that are often times lethal. Everyone I have spoken to has reccomended sticking with Invisible Fence. JMO :D

Oh yea, Inivisible Fence uses the warning beeps and if they actually do get through the shock and pass over the 'invisible fence' the shocking stops immediately. Other off-brands have been known to continue shocking and the dog becomes confused and frightened and never makes it back into the safe zone not out of bad behavior but out of sheer confusion!:eek: Creepy!

We used one of them as a MUST for a beagel we had who likes to escape. It was wonderful for her. She knew that when it beeped it was her warning and never got shocked. Most of the give a warning beep!
There are different shock settings for the collars. You wouldn't set the shock for a 5lbs dog the same as a 50lbs dog. That wouldnt make sense.
When we got the one we have for training I tested it out on me. It wasnt for Brody it was for a Lab we are getting but I was curious. On the lite setting it was like a really good static charge. Didnt hurt but let you know.
My problem with using them on the small dogs is that well...we have Hawks and Brody is only 3lbs, the size of a small bunny. I am afraid the Hawks would take off with his and he would be lunch. We have had them sitting outside watching him before. So when we get the lab and have him trained for the fence Brody want get to use the freedom. He is too small.

Invisible Fence
 

I have an invisible fence for my golden retriever (+120 pounds, one big boy), but I don't even put the collar on him half the time because he now knows the properties borders. I would never put it on my yorkie or a cat. They are just too small. I also live in an area with bears, coyotes, etc. with wildlife that could easily carry my yorkie away. She is only outside when someone is with her and that is the way it will stay.

I agree. When I get my little one, he's never going to be outside without supervision. We have lots of wildlife, and I think it's better if he's watched so I'll know what he's doing and where he is at all times. I really don't like the invisible fence for small dogs like yorkies. They may be fine for bigger dogs, but I've felt that shock through 4 other people and it wasn't pleasant!
