Has anyone tried a bell? Our new family member, Rocky (I REALLY need to posts pics of him) is about 85% potty trained. He is about 10 weeks old. He goes to the front door when he needs out and sits and waits. GOOD BOY!!! Sometimes I am busy and don't see him so I was thinking about using a bell. My friend has a rat terrier that she trained to ring the bell when she needed out. Anyone ever tried this? What is the best way to start?? Thanks for any input!) Jodie |
Welcome fellow "Rocky owner"..I think theres 3 of us now! LOL. I'm going to start training my baby on the bells but not until tomarrow because that's when we move. I want to start him fresh in a new house. I just went to wallmart and bought catbells, and some thicker thread and am going to tie them to the door, but if you go to the poochie bells website they have directions on how to train your dog with them. Ha... I knew Rocky was a popular name. We named him that because he would get on his hind legs and move his front legs (like a doggy paddle movement) and it looked like he was boxing so we called him Rocky LOL. What is the website you are refering to? I'm new here so I don't quite know what you are talking about. Thanks for your reply though!!!!!!!!!! I'm sure the site will help a lot! I guess either we are the only two that are wanting to use a bell to train our yorkies, or other people don't reply to newcomers. I've tried asking questions before on here with little replies. But I see other members that have been here a while post and they get a lot replies back. Hmmm. Is there another yorkie forum online anywhere that you know of?? Thanks for the help!!!! Hi, I have a "Rocky" too and I have tried the Bell.. and it didn't work very well with mines. maybe it was because he was already 1 yrs old. When I tried bringing his paws up to ring it, he would get startled and just want nothing to do with the bell. HE was terrified of the sound. But my rocky bear is a bit on the weird side... he seems to be scared of a lot of things. Maybee it will work for your rocky! :D |
My Rocky is just a baby - so maybe it will work? I haven't tried it yet. I did read on the site posted above that it is recommended not to use their paws to ring the bell. Instead, incourage them to use their nose. I wonder if that would of worked better? Wish me luck. I'm gonna try it in a couple weeks. After we get housebreaking down pat a little better. He's doing great, considering.... but sometimes he forgets where the door is I think :eyebrow2:. |
I tried the bell. She likes going outside, but not always because she's gotta "go". So she rang it CONSTANTLY. Since I live in an apt, that means that I've got to get the leash & go out with her every time. It got really old & I had to get rid of the bell. But now that she's a little older, I'm thinking of trying it again. |
I am trying to train my right now to use the bells. but it's not going to well. it's only been two days thou. he just looks at me like i am nuts when i ring the bells I am going to get on that web sight and see how they tell you to train. |

I trained Chance to ring the bell and now he is very consistant with it. It was pretty basic...just ring the bell and say "outside". And be consistant and before I knew it he was doing it. :thumbup: I was just responding to why maybe you did not see alot of posts. Seems like this subject has been on here alot. Have you tried it yet? |

Hi, I started Kacee out on door bells as just a baby. They catch on to them in absolutely no time at all. Kacee is now nearly 16 months old and never, ever has accidents!:D Oh! I wanted to add that sometimes she hits it with her paw, too, and sometimes just uses her nose. Once in awhile she'll bark as well or make some weird crying noise along with ringing the bell. I love those bells! I can hear them all over the house! |
Loki rings a bell to go outside. The bell took us from 95% housetrained to 100%. I'm sure the accidents were only because we were missing it. Loki rings them when he has to go and sometimes if someone is outside in the driveway (we have a townhouse). We have 3 neighbors who share a driveway so he knows who they are and sometimes wants to go out to see them. Otherwise if it's a stranger he will bark. We don't really go out that door for "playtime" We don't have a fence so he goes out to potty on a leash, otherwise he's on a walk. It's even a different harness and leash for a walk, plus I tell him we are going on a walk, so he knows the difference. If he goes out to the yard and doesn't do his thing I just call him back in, so it's no fun anyway. The leash helps!! |
