Agility Information Nested courses for all abilities??? Does anyone know what this means? There is a doggie park/fun weekend coming up close by and they will have agility courses for all levels for a free trial and I'm thinking of taking Simon. Thanks~ |
take his extra special favorite soft treats along and have a great time! that's how we got Ginger involved in agility the first time! If you have someone else along, take pictures! Gooooo Simon! (They'll probably have a real simple course set up for beginners and have people to help you walk Simon through the course. Don't expect a lot the first time...just have fun) |
I don't know a lot about agility but I do think it would be fabulous for Simon. He loves to run and play ball and I think it would be good for his brain (I think he's too smart). How do you start? Besides this free trial weekend that we are going to on the 20th. I think Simon would be a superstar and I think it would help with his energy! Thanks for any help |
That sounds like so much fun. I'm looking into some classes for my guys, but they have to take Basic Obedience first. Check with your local Kennel Clubs. Do an online search for clubs in your area. Also your local animal shelter and vet might have informtion. |
Jaxon LOVED his beginner agility class and he was a total superstar. There was only 1 other dog in the class so we got a lot of one-on-one time with the instructor. I hope to start intermediate classes in the fall. I'm sure Simon will love the classes too. I think it's a fun thing for them and they learn so fast. Keep us posted on how it goes!! |
Chizzie and I start basic obedience on 8/14. I sincerely hope that we are able to move on to agility. They hae a FANTASTIC course set up! and they already have ONE yorkie participating :) |
agility rocks! I'm going to do my first ribbon trial next weekend. It's going to be more about seeing how I perform than how dougal performs. WeeEvil has just started the beginners class and aside from being a little freaked out by all the big dogs she seems to love it. I love agility and I can see that Dougal is really loving it too. He especially loves the tunnel and the dog walk. Have fun at the event and be sure to post any video and photos alaskayorkie and I love to see agility yorks! |

Simon will be an absolute star! We're only just starting out, but it seems like energy is the #1 most important quality in this sport, especially for Yorkies. Check your local obedience schools. They should have a series of agility courses you can take, depending on how serious you want to get. I started with a fun class called "Jumpers," and I'm glad I did. It wasn't so intimidating where they had to learn scary new tricks every week. They just jumped. I think it's so cool that more YTers seem to be getting involved in agility! |
We are going on Saturday :) It's like a doggie fair and so I think we will go and try it. I just worry about Simon being so easily distracted by everything. We'll see thought, I think it will be super fun! |
Don't worry about how you do on the weekend just have fun. That's what agility is all about. At my agility classes the people that didn't go on were the ones that weren't loving on their dogs for all the work the dogs were doing. As for attention issues for Simon, if you have something that you KNOW he loves with you I'm pretty sure he'll be focussed on you. I've seen all those pics of him with his soccer balls maybe one of those would work and certainly a few of your tastiest treats will do the trick too. Make sure he knows you've got them with you - give him one and show him that you've popped the rest in your pocket. It might be a good idea to make sure Haillie is out of eye and ear shot of you and Simon (just while you're doing the agility bit). When I did my second round on the weekend we had Dixie out of the car and I think that was part of why Dougal totally lost the plot on the second round. Dixie was apparently frantic when she heard my voice calling out to Dougal. As she knows all the same commands as Dougal she was probably thinking "Mum, I want to go over hurdle and through the tunnel but Dad's holding on to me so I can't!!" |
It sounds like great fun. If they were having one here, I would be going. |
