nine months and having potty problems!!! Its been a while since I've been around but I need some advise... When I first got Oliver I wasn't supposed to have him in my apartment so I trained him to use a potty pad. There wasn't much of a problem with that except now I am in my own house and really would rather train him to go outside. He is just not getting it... I take him out often and he'll pee, but then he just wants to play. He rarely poops outside even if I keep him out there for a long time. When he comes back in he goes in the same spot inside pretty quickly after we get in. I've cleaned the floor with several different cleaners trying to erase the smell but he keeps going back... I also have my boyfriend's dog living with me who is extremely well trained and will go sit by the door when he needs to go. I would love to get Oliver to do the same! Any thoughts????? Oh, I've gone back to putting him in his crate anytime I'm not giving him my undivided attention, but with the other dog walking around I feel like I'm being too mean... |
Keep doing what you are doing and he will eventually get it. Since you have changed methods on him, u are basically having to re-pottytrain him. Crate training is an excellent way to potty train. I don't think it's bad that the other dog is out and your dog is in the crate. Maybe you could try putting the crate in another room with the door shut so your yorkie won't even know that the other dog is out. I keep my puppy in a crate and my adult yorkie gets to roam free. She doesn't seem to mind. |
This will sound gross but try taking some of his poop outside and leave it there. Direct him to it when you take him outside. Dogs often stimulate themselves to defecate by smelling their own (old) poop. Be sure that you praise and reward heavily when he does go outside! Personally, I don't think using the crate is necessary (but many swear by it). I would just watch him like a hawk and swoop down and take him outside when he gets ready to go inside. If he finishes outside, have a party! |
When Luna picked a particular spot to poop, I cleaned it (like a thousand times), and moved her food to the same spot... She never pooped again (at least there) LOL Probably, that, combined with the bells, and cheerrios as treats after potty, will work. It worked for us! |
You might try taking a pee pad outside and put in a spot where you want him to go and then eventually after he gets the idea of going outside, take the pee pad away. I am going to do that with Jasmine after the hot weather subsides. Good luck. Marhat and Jasmine (my precious little girl):aimeeyork :aimeeyork |
