anyone can help ?? :animal-pa Well Gracie will be 4 months and is not potty trained :( i take her out and she will go but she will not go to the door when she needs to or anything she will just use it where ever she wants i dont know what i should do to make her tell me when she needs to go! Any advice on potty trained is much needed!! |
At 4 months it's unlikely she knows that she needs to go until 10 seconds before. It's your job to keep her empty by taking her out a lot and if you can't watch her (or you can't pick up on her signs, sniffing, circling, etc.) then you need to keep her in a crate. Also try tethering her to you with a leash. You'll still have accidents so try to restrict her access to the carpet or places that are harder to clean up. Make sure you go outside with her and praise her and give her a treat the second she goes! Once she does get fair warning, she needs to learn the proper way to tell you she needs to go out. We struggled with this because Loki would scratch or paw at the door but unless you were watching him you'd never know (he was too quiet). I would spend too much time following him around especially if he went downstairs for any reason, even if it was to get a toy or a drink of water, I'd have to follow him to make sure he wasn't going to the door. I put up a ribbon w/ bells on it and taught him to swat at the bells when he needs to go out. This works well since I can hear it anywhere in the house. |
4 months is very young yet. Watch her as closely as you can to see any "signals" she might give you to let you know she needs to go. It can be as simple as just sitting and looking at you. Once you are able to identify her signals and patterns, it will be easier to know when she needs to go out. As you get the hang of it, she will too. Hang in there and good luck. |
We use a bell suspended from the back door, like Erin suggested. Works wonderfully well for us! Jodie is also right that most dogs will eventually figure out a way to let you know when they have to go (I just happen to prefer the bell-ringing method). I had one dog and a cat who would just sit and stare at the back door when they needed to go. I had one dog who would come to me and spin in circles. I had one Husky who would "talk" to me and run excitedly back and forth between me and the back door. They do figure out a way to communicate with you eventually, but it takes time (and perceptiveness on your part!). |
There is so much great advice on this site concerning potty training. The best thing to do is no matter who's advice you take, be consistant and patient. They can't help it if you screw up in their training. :) |
Since we are on this subject and I still have some (VERY FEW) accidents with my 8 month old can I ask what age everyones was when they finally got it down 100%? I honestly am doing everything you guys just said - I am giving praise and treats but sometimes he has an occasional accident. Thanks! |
