help with pottying outside!!!!!!!!! I am trying to get Hailey(whom is paper trained )to go potty outside. She does pee but she won't poop! Everytime i know she has to go poop i take her outside and she makes me wait forever without doing nothing then, as soon as she comes into the house she goes straight to the papers so i pick her up and take her back outside (this process repeats several times).I keep papers down because it's not easy for me to take her outside to go pee every so often since i live on the 2nd floor and i have several stairs to do.Anyway, the other night she had to go poop bad so i took her out and she made me wait 1 &1/2 hour!!!!!!!Then she finally could not hold it anymore and she did it but that was the only time. Also, last weekend i was at a friend's house for a couple of days and she was doing good there.Everytime i would say "Go potty "she would do it within 5-10 minutes. Why doesn't she do it here? This is getting so frustrating!:( Am i doing something wrong?Should i get rid of the papers inside?Maybe it's getting her confused.Any advice would be appreciated.:thumbs up |
Oliver has never pooped outside either. He's been box/paper trained since a pup. He poops & pees in the box on the paper, but only pees outside. I don't mind though, I'm actually greatful for it, especially in the winter, or when in rains, cause it's small enough, and easily cleaned up. Yet, what I can't understand is that we could be outside all day, 50 times a day, and he'll still wait to come in for poop. lol. Silly furbaby! :D |
could you bring the paper outside with you when you know she has to go poop? Even is she goes on the paper outside, you are training her to go on the paper, but she will learn that the paper is outside. And hopefully hold it until she can get outside to go on the paper. Eventually, you can decrease the size of the paper until she is going on a dime size piece and the transition to grass will be smoother. I think that this may take over a period of months, because the changes to the size of the paper have to be barely noticable. |
Walk her! Walk, walk, walk...and the urge will become irresistable. Plus, you'll both get some exercise. |
I share the same frustration as you do but I don't train Diamond on paper because I know she will get used to that and I rather have her go outside. She ALWAYS goes pee outside. I just have to watch her when she runs off especially and sometimes I catch her going or squatting already so I just quickly scoop her up and take her outside and praise her. Yet at my parents house she goes so quick. I really think it has to do with the grass. The grass at my apartment is always kinda long in length and my parents grass is much shorter. This is what my mom seems to think too. Maybe try another patch of grass where you live? I also live on the second floor so we always have to get on the elevator-off the elevator-outside-back on the elevator, etc. Kinda annoying. |

Also, they get used to the feel of whatever they are trained on. Grass feels VERY different from paper (or anything else) and it also smells different. Wierd but try taking some paper outside and even some poop - it's even OK to act like she did it and praise her! Another wierd suggestion - can you bring a small clump of grass inside to put on her paper so she can at least smell it??? |
I think everyone pretty much summed it up. Either move the paper outside, take a walk and move the bowels, or give praise by giving treats. Thats what I am doing at the presnt time and it's working really well. She watches me to see if I'm watching her go potty. As soon as she is done, she runs to me for a treat. It's so dang cute. |

Cali is pad trained as well and will not go outside. I walk her and my pom who is trained only to go outside and she waits til we get home. I would like her to go both in and out but she just won't. I may try the taking her pad outside thing. |

As for walking her, that's another issue i am having with her.She just doesn't seem to like walking that much.I take her out twice a day but most of the time i have to drag her to make her walk!I also bring treats with me but not much walk is done. Anyway, for what concerns taking the papers outside, i did try that approach a couple of times but she ended up playing with the paper, shredding it. I'll definetely keep on trying though! Today i got rid of the papers inside, maybe it'll help her a little with the confusion. I'll just have to watch her like a hawk and take her out whenever she has to go pee.Do you think it's too sudden?Thank you all for your help.I''l keep you updated on her progress, hopefully!:yorkietal |
