I met with a client yesterday who shared that she had just gotten a new puppy (a 3 mo. old golden retriever) and was having great success training with the insight of a book that she had read. It is called "The Art of Raising a New Puppy" by the Monks of New Skete. She said the authors raise german shepards. Have any of you read this book and if so, would it be helpful in the training of my new Yorkie puppy? I have already read 3 training books, two of which are pure Yorkie related. Thanks.

I have not read their book yet, but its on my list. They are excellent trainers and i do recommend reading it. Many other books that i've read have refered to his book, and the monks themselves. give it a go

I would not recommend it. It has a lot of old, outdated theories about "pack" mentality, alpha rolls, hitting your dog, forcing it to be submissive, etc. That's not a great way to establish a bond with your new puppy. I think a better approach is to teach them what you expect and show them how to behave, rather than punish them.

Two great straightforward books are by Pat Miller. One is Positive Perspectives and the other is The Power of Positive Dog Training. I would highly recommend either of those two books to start out. I have many more on my bookshelf worth recommending, if you are interested. She also has a website with great information and additional recommendations.

i believe in reading about all the different types of training out there. There is no one way to train a dog. Its about finding what works for you and your dog. Which, most of the time, is a combination of different techniques. I read as much as i can and take what information i agree with from every book. its the best way to get the most knowledge about training.

Thanks so much for the feedback. I do not believe in hitting any animal for any reason. I don't want my baby to be submissive, I just want her to behave. I think I may shop around a bit more and will visit the website. I will probably only get one chance to do it right when my baby is a baby. The positive approach is what is used at the puppy classes I plan to take Gracie to. Thanks so much!

I tried a number of training methods til I found clicking and there's no going back for me! I cannot recommend it highly enough - it's all about positive re-inforcement, there's no punishment involved.

I would recommend reading the book. Learning what not to do is important too. Even if you absolutely hate 99% of the book, you might find one simple tip that will help you.

I am an avid reader.... I read any and all training material I can get my hands on. Even though most of what I read goes into my mental FILE 13:thumbdown, it is rare that I read a book that doesn't give me an idea that I can modify to make work for me.

I agree with Erin. I think even the Monk who used the Alpha Roll in the book stated later he wished he had never put it in the book. To many novice people were using it without enough behaviorial training.
