Loki is completely anti-social with other dogs. He would definately rather hang out with humans - big dogs make him nervous. We socialized him in puppy classes early, but he is still scared. I don't blame him! The thing is that we work on it EVERY SINGLE DAY. We take training classes. I read all the books. We invite nice, calm neighbor dogs over to play with him. We take him to doggie daycare with the trainer that we trust so he can play off-leash with pre-approved dogs and feel less threatened. We sit on the side of the walking path while other dogs walk by and I give him treats when he looks at the other dog and doesn't start barking. We praise him when he has a normal butt-sniffing hello with another dog. For him, that's a huge accomplishment. So, I do understand. He wasn't even a rescue, we got him as a puppy. This is just his personality and temperament. But rather than accept it, we are helping him to feel more confident. People tell me they are impressed by how well trained he is - but I know that we have to work EXTRA hard when other dogs are around to maintain that. I totally understand how difficult and time-consuming this is to take on. I just hope that I can express how much they can improve with help. I really hope you can help little Jig to behave and listen to you. I think you can :) You've tried so many things so far, you just need to try the right things.

Have you tried a leash that is adjustable. I have one for my little girl. She gets so excited about going for a walk. I also use a harness. When we go walking, she is so excited, wants to see and smell everything. I adjust the leash to where she cannot get any farther ahead of me than I want her to be. Today I went to a Farmer's Market and took her. I kept her at my side and she was just fine. She too would get ahead of me and at times she is pulling and walking only on her back legs. I have control by using the adjustable leash. You can get them at Petsmart and Petco. To use anything other than a harness is asking for problems.

I want to thank everyone for their advice. I think I'll continue to read up on this. I live in a rural town in Ohio with limited resources regarding the trainers and unfortunately, I live on a busy highway so I have no "neighborhood" to walk in without driving to get there.

I have done the 15 min a day walk. This spring he did O.K. with our "normal route" (which is basically a long driveway belonging to the neighbor), but when we went camping this season he reverted back to the same behavior that he was doing before. I thought I had it licked after the daily walks. He was doing so well with that. I think there was just too much new for him to look at, he was too excited. Since we go to different camp grounds every 2 weeks or so, I don't know what to do. He walks pretty good on our "normal route" and I think it's A-O.K. Then as soon as we get to the campgrounds he's a different dog. I don't even let other people who ask come and pet him. I don't want him distracted. I tell them I'm training him. And, I don't just LET him walk in front of me. I try to keep the slack so that he's at my side. I've tried adjustable leashes, leashes that are less than 4 feet long, even a double leash hoping that my other yorkie who can basically walk without a leash and stay by my side will help show him what to do. Nothing helps. He just winds up pulling her.

This walking is only the tip of his iceburg at the campgrounds. It's here that he encounters the other animals. He barks and tries to get at them. I've had to put up a play yard for him because tying him up attached to his harness didn't work so well. He worked so hard, he would often slip out of his harness then go running wild throughout the campground. He's faster than a speeding bullet, by the way.

If you have to stop every two steps then that is what you do, the idea here is to teach, not to walk. Ceasar Milan would not even take the first step until the dog was in a calm state of mind, if he is chomping at the bit then don't even take the first step, Just stand there.

You tried the choker and it didn't work, so may as well give it up. Chokers are for dogs that you cannot RESTRAIN with an ordinary collar. That should not be an issue with a 2.5 pound dog.

So first thing you do is get the dog to stand calmly beside you on a leash. Then reward him. Then take it one step at a time.

Dawn - you might want to read up on Fear Aggression because you have posted more information which leads me to believe this is what is going on with your little one. I have one just like yours. For some odd reason Yorkies will take on any other animal even if they are 20 times it size.

Just google fear aggression with other dogs as there are a lot of articles about it.

And the fact that his behavior has excalated as I have tried to correct him only helps me to believe that this is probably the issue. All this time I've thought it was just dominance and that for some reason he was anti-social.

I agree with walking everyday, even if it isn't for a long period of time. This will get him used to walking. Sadie was a terrible walker...she would also pull on her lead. I have never used a collar...(only as jewelry) But even with her harness she would sometimes choke. When I started walking Sadie if she started to pull I would tell her NO and make her sit and wait for a couple of seconds (yorkies attention spans aren't much longer than that!) Then we would start walking again. This has helped alot...She still isn't the best walker but she is getting better everyday. As for dog aggression and chasing, I tie Sadie outside with enough rope to roam the back yard. I NEVER leave her out alone...( coyotes in the area!) If she sees a chipmunk, bird, squirrel...pretty much anything that moves she will try to chase it...My Mom and Dad have a mini schnauzer that Sadie has pretty much been brought up with. I also introduce her to other dogs on our walks..This has helped her get used to other animals (thank god!!! we have a new furbaby coming home next month)..
