Potty Training
 

Ok, so I'm new to this site, and am very happy to have found a site with so much information to help me with my new furballs. It's also comforting to know that others have the same problems!

I see that the issue of potty training is a common one. My Gabi is 14 months old, and still has not "got it" Gina is 4 months old, and is doing a lot better that her older sister. Will Gabi ever "get it"?

I did try crate training, but just hated having them locked up - I feel so guilty. I watch them like hawks, and we go out every 1/2 - 1 hour. I'm now also trying to make it "worth their while", so we have jackpot treats(roast chicken bits) I let them smell the treat first, then tell them, "let's go wee wee girls", then we go outside. If they do their business, then I immediately pop a treat in their mouths and praise them lavishly. Bottom line, no business - no treat. This is a new idea that we are trying (about 4 days now)

I've also decided to try and introduce the bells, so when we go out, I ring the bells and then open the door. Do you think that it's too much to do all at one time?

What I can't understand is that both of them hold all night, but won't hold during the day. Is this normal?

Am I doing the right thing? Any help on this matter would be welcomed.

You are absolutely doing the right thing. It does seem to take yorkies longer to potty train than other dogs. Are you able to stay at home when them during the day? If not, what do you do with them while you're gone??

I don't think introducing the bells in too much. The only other thing I could recommend is if you see them going potty in the house, clap your hands real loud and give a stern NO. Then take them right outside and if they finish up out there, then give them a treat.

GOOD LUCK! Don't give up. It seems like you are doing everything right at this point. I am sure that she will get than hang of it in no time at all. :thumbup:

You might need to go back to the basics with the older one and keeping her confined to a hard surface floor.

It's so hard, cause they are all different.

Is a pet door an opption for you, such as do you own the home, do you have a fenced yard?

Unfortunately, I work, so the day's are a bit challenging. My babies had the run of the tiled area of my home (lounge/dining/kitchen) but after discussing this with my trainer, she has told me that the area is too big, so now I keep them outside in the enclosed courtyard during the day. I was just concerned about this, as their is no view!! I know this sounds ridiculous, but when they were inside, they were able to look out of the french doors, and I also left the radio on softly for them. No I feel guilty that they just look at concrete walls all dy. I don't suppose they can have evertying their way though!! I do put paper down for them in a litter tray, so they can learn to do their business in one area. Gina is already getting the idea, but not Gabi.

I'm sure though that things will come right. Luckily, my husband is also very good about this, so consistency is not the problem.

Oh by the way, I do clap and give the stern NO when I catch them. Gina is easy to "catch" but Gabi seems to only go when I'm not watching. I've never caught her in the act. I only find the evidence!!

Hi. Yes I do own the home, and yes I do have a fully walled yard, but I don't have a pet door. Unfortunately, I cannot leave my babies outside, as there a lot of hawks in the area where I live in sunny South Africa!! At the risk of sounding stupid, how would a pet door help me???? I've seen them at the local pet store. Surely I'd still have to be careful with the hawks, so I could not just rely on them letting themselves out?
