Constant Barking on outtings  Hello again everyone. I hope someone has had this experience and can give me some insite into how to correct/stop it. Whenever we take Lexi out for a walk, she barks at everyone that passes. And she'll continue barking until that person is out of site. And car rides are almost unbearable. I've tried stopping the walk and holding her little face in my hands and telling her no, no, no but as soon as I let go she starts barking again. Makes walking on nice days kinda difficult. |
From the ground up Well what type of barking is it? If you don't believe it is a dangerous barking every so often I would get down to her level and acknowledge her. I think it will only get worse if she thinks your ignoring her. So maybe you could pick her up and hold her, despite how scared she may be ask the stranger to please stop and pet her. It might help show her that what she's barking at isn't so bad. Remember you got to think from her point of view, imagine how a dreamy 6ft blonde hair blue eye hunk would look to them from the ground up. I'm guessing an awful lot like the Eiffel tower, but moving. |
Thank you for replying. It's a contant loud, growling bark. If the person stops to pet her, she's very submissive. She has a very sweet disposition. I think it's a bark/growl for attention but I don't know how to get her to understand that not everyone will stop to acknowledge her and she has to stop. I;ve tried shortening her leash up real short and shhhhhs'ing her but it doesn't help. |
info :D It is probably becuase she gets ecited or the noise! :) Dont worry! ;) |
i think it is just the excitement........ my cairn terrier used to do this EVERY TIME WE TOOK A WALK, the only way he would stop is if we ran, otherwise it was "BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK" all around the neighborhood |
I'm the opposite.. Mocha runs up to everything that possibly moves, including a plastic bag today on our walk.. My friends Maltese does this too... She barks at everyone that walks by.. She just picks her up and takes her over to the person and lets her smell them.. I think that is simialer to what PZgunstare said.. Good luck and keep us posted |
Bkessler I think you might be onto something there. Lexi barks at everyone, but when a person stops and talks with her, she stops. As a matter of fact, she becomes submissive, rolling over on her belly. Maybe she wants attention from everyone? Thanks for replying. |
I have and Im still having that same problem with Lady. She is 17 months old and has always been VERY vocal on her walks, but if we walk our babies together, its a very traumatic ordeal for ME! lol.She barks and barks and barks the WHOLE time, not at people..she just barks for the sake of it.If we walk ahead of her or Jess steps ahead of her,she goes nuts!! She just barks the whole time:( Right now I have to walk them seperately which is a sad thing because I would love to take them out together, but the noise is so unbearable that I end up with a headache and they end up with a very short walk.My neighbours also complain because they say that they can hear us coming from a mile away and can always tell when we leave.. If anyone knows how to stop this, please share:thumbup: |
well....... like i said i had this problem with my cairn.... we never figured out how to stop it...... i can give you some advise though, DONT try a muzzle because it doesnt help all that much they are still vocal |
Are there muzzles for 2lb dogs?? lol.I would never try that, but I do have to pick her up sometimes and hold her mouth shut..especially when we are coming home. Our neighbours arent very dog friendly and they complain every time.Lady may be small, but she has a bark loud enough to break glass..lol. |
our babies don't bark at people...in fact they love people...they bark at other dogs...we always tell them not to ...they would stop when we walk away or when we continue walking...but at dog parks they would continue barking for 2-4 mins. until they get used to the other dogs... |
I know that sound...I guess my husband & I still need to continue the weekly outings to dog parks...more socialization with other dogs... |
Lady is so cute!!!Our babies are both 8 months old...brother and sister...Cleo & Ceasar... |
My Gucci also barks at every noise. When people comes over she wil bark but i carry her and let her smell the person and she stops. So i guess this might help like someone else already posted. I also have problems with my neighbor, she hates Gucci barking. One time she ask me to please train Gucci. I told her I was trying. I live in an Apt bldg so you know how hard that is. Im trying to train Gucci but so far still barks, I have to carry her to calm her down. :D :) |
how old is GUCCI now? Just keep on trying...it won't happen overnight... |

I'm taking some comfort in knowing that this may be a Yorkie or small dog trait to bark so much but now it's getting somewhat better outside and becoming embarrassing inside. WHen someone comes over to visit Lexi goes crazy. She barks, snarls and growls. It's hard to convince someone that she won't bite, which she doesn't, and that if they pet her she'll get over it. And what's worse is she's only getting over it with maybe 1 out of every 5 people. She's chased 2 of my teenage daughters friends from the house already! I pick her up, I try to gently push down on her nose, I try saying NO, I sush her and NOTHING stops it. I'm hoping that having her in the yard at summer get togethers will get her over this thing with new people. I'm really hoping that being around a crowd get's her over it. So hard to tell people that are being snarled at that she's the sweetest little girl ever...and she truely is. Please, please, keep your suggestions and stories coming. |
Hello, Chelsey 1978 My girl is also named Lady and loves to bark! I usually just let her out in the yard and bring her in when she starts up thank goodness we don't have alot of other dogs in the neighbourhood or busy street! My other dog Sprocket I don't mind taking for walks he's great in fact I've never heard him bark ever! They can have very different personalities can't they? :p |
No Fear / No Barking Because I know that my past dogs have barked out of fear, I have taken my 3 month old Yorkie Mya everywhere for the last 2 weeks. She is not afraid of people, other dogs or any noise. She only barks when she is playing with our other dog. I had a foster dog that was a chronic barker. A spray bottle full of water worked to calm her constant barking down a great deal. I light mist in the face worked but you have to be fast so that the dog does not see the bottle. The dollar stores sell little bottles. For another dog we tried the beeping collar. It drove us nuts because not only did we hear constant barking but we also heard constant beeping!!! It was also not fair to the other dogs; I had 4 foster dogs in my home at that time. I ran in to the person that adopted the chronic barker just today. She said she is doing well and has not reverted back to the constant barking. She had not kept up using the spray bottle. So you can teach a dog not to bark. You can also try rewarding a dog for doing nothing, being quiet. That has also worked for me in the past. Good Luck ! cyn Driving the grammatically correct insane, one posting at a time. |
